President's Message

Approximately 17 years ago, the Rotary Club of Wellington was approved as an authorized partner of The Beer Store, specifically to operate a local bottle return facility.  This new initiative, fondly referred to as the “Bottle Depot”, has become a cornerstone of our Club.  In the first few years, revenues averaged a modest $2000 per year.  It has climbed over the past years, and in the 2020-21 Rotary year revenues have exploded to an astonishing $50k.

Our push to raise money for the new PEC Hospital undoubtedly helped improve revenues last year, as did people staying home during COVID-19 lockdowns.   Although we don’t anticipate these results to continue, the reality is that our Bottle Depot has become the Club’s primary fundraiser, while at the same time providing a welcomed, almost essential, community service.  Of course, with success comes commitment.

The operation of the Bottle Depot requires a lot of volunteer hours by our Club.  Traditionally Club members excels at pitching in whenever and however they can, so I encourage you to sign up for duty when “Bottle Billy” sends out the schedule.  If you personally can’t participate or are unable to do the physical work, perhaps a family member or friend might be able to help.  Thankfully, we have many Friends of Rotary that volunteer regularly at the Bottle Depot …without these folks we would often be short-handed.  We always need at least one Rotarian per shift to handle the cash float and represent the Club.

Thanks to all Rotarians and Friends of Rotary who have been, and may continue to be, part of building the success of the Bottle Depot initiative.  In 2005, who would have ever thought we would be where we are today.  Truly an example of Service above Self.

President Trudy Brown

Last Week:  Club Forum

MPres Trudy called the meeting to order with 25 present in person and 8 by Zoom. After O'Canada the Club Forum opened with a report on the previous evening’s Board Meeting including thanks for donations from beneficiaries, the range of enquiries fielded by Sec Lyn, a County tree-planting program (Barry to liaise) and Casa Dea’s proposal for a joint hospital fundraiser (declined).

Immediate Past Treasurer Trudy presented her final budget for the Rotary year to June 30 all the information contained in which, including spreadsheets, is available on-line to members in the secure section of our website. MPres Trudy then proceeded with her in-coming President’s budget for the up-coming year, which after some discussion was passed in a motion from Mike, seconded by Bill M, unanimously.

Sec Lyn will send the required acceptance question to members regarding potential new Club members Christine Dimitris and Peter Campbell.

A request had been received from Kate’s Rest for the Club to issue a document acknowledging the Club’s support for KR, to be used in the application process for grants. Liz Bosma proposed and Geoff Telling seconded the motion. After some discussion of the nature and scope of such a document, an amendment was proposed by Yvonne Buys to include an end date to the time period of this support. The motion was approved, as amended, by a clear majority but with two opposing.

In another motion, proposed by Bill Hurst, seconded by Chris Compeau, up to $1000 would be budgeted for the completion of the unfinished bathroom/shower at Kate’s Rest. This was also carried by a clear majority, with one opposing vote.

Bill Mitchell’s bottle depot volunteer requests were addressed but there are repeated last-minute needs to be covered for the service.

Colin Frederick outlined preliminary arrangements for the Annual Golf Tournament, and the Golf Committee met after the main meeting.

Pres Elect Ken, reminded members of the on-going need for volunteers at the vaccination clinics on Aug 9, 16, & 23.

After recognising John Heeringa's birthday and the 4 Way Test, the meeting closed at 8.30.

             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
