Club Bulletin for week of February 28, 2023
This Week:  Club Forum

                  President's Message

Winter has returned with lots of snow and frigid temperatures. As March approaches it is time to start thinking about some spring things, yes only six more weeks and the golf courses will be opening.

We had a wonderful Family Day Event this past Monday. It was so nice to see so many families with their young children (and grandchildren) enjoying the events at the Community Center. Special thanks to Liz and her team for entertaining the dozens of kids in the Rotary Room. County Kids Reads members were on hand to distribute a 100 free books to the kids.

Our Rotary Soup/Chili Lunch turned out to be a huge success with 16 different crock pots of delicious soup, chili, and baked beans. Lyn McGowan's recipe for Vegetarian Chili was such a success she had served all of her pot in the first 30 minutes. So proud to see  Club MEMBERS and our SUPPORTERS working together and serving over 200 people during this event.

Finally a note of caution to everyone. It appears COVID is still around. One of our Members and his wife have tested positive and my wife Luanne was sick with COVID in Ottawa over the Family Day weekend. While it seems like this Virus is a thing of the past in reality it may be with us for awhile. It is still good advice to stay home when you are not feeling well and don't throw out those rapid test kits you might need them again...

Last Week:  Terry Green

(Dog Trainer)

Notes by Barry Davidson

22 members today were present in person and 3 by Zoom.

Terry Green of Wellington, a retired policeman, spoke today as a professional dog trainer. He lives with his wife, Joanna, on Carla Court. Contact details: rtgreen.57@gmail.com; 1-647-701-5155.

He described the domestication of dogs that has appeared in cave painting from long ago, starting in China and Western Europe with the grey wolf. Now dogs play their entire life, whereas wolfs only play when young.

Terry started to train his dog when he was only 12 years old and he was hunting in Northern Ontario.

He told us how dogs’ smell faculty is its strongest sense, and how it is used to track and perform other tasks for the police.

To train dogs and to train the owners, you have to maintain the dominate position. He described the process and gave us do’s and don’t to be successful and to make the dog’s life enjoyable. He said he was available to be hired to help any of us if we have a dog.

Other Club Business

Ken congratulated all the volunteers who made the Family Day celebrations a success yesterday. We served 250 people with soup & chilli & beans. A special thanks to Liz Bosma for setting up and operating the entertainment and literacy section for the children. She in turn thanked Bill P. for schlepping all the fixtures for the kids play area.

Yvonne reported that she has sold 401 bottles of maple syrup of our 700 available so members should continue to sell.

Jacques advertised a “Curlathon” in Picton on March 18-19 from which all proceeds will go to “Back the Build”. Jacques and Janet are challenging Phyo and Trudy, and he understands that Lana and her corporate team are competing as well. Jacques passed around a sponsor sheet to support his team.

Today the number drawn for the 50:50 did not draw the Ace of Spades.

Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all
             concerned?

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
