President's Message
Preparations for the Wellington Rotary “Community Appreciation Day” on August 20th are really coming together. Tim Cox first brought the idea to the club on April 25th, where the response was overwhelmingly positive - show our appreciation to the Wellington community that has supported us for the past 20 years? YES!
Once they were given the go-ahead, Tim and co-conspirator Bill Mitchell wasted no time. They quickly settled on the date, secured the location, hired the bands and decided on the menu. With a little help from their friends, they’ve secured the outright donation and/or discounted price for a lot of the food and services. There will be an arm-wrestling competition, face-painters and a petting zoo, among other things. At the appropriate time, a professional photographer will (weather permitting) take drone shots of the crowd to commemorate the event.
It’s shaping up to be a fantastic day – if the weather cooperates! We really don’t know how many people to expect, but the whole Wellington community is invited and it’s being well-publicized. So, we hope it will be BIG.
I’m looking forward to working at the event – wherever Tim tells me I’m needed – and I hope you are too. Many hands will help to make this day a success. So, put out the word to your family and friends and let’s make sure Wellington feels the love.
In closing, please have a look at The Times this week, page 5. Ted’s parents, Tom and Marjorie Nash, are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary. What an achievement! Congratulations to the happy (and very photogenic) couple and the entire Nash family.

Last Week: Steve Rutledge - Laos projects update

ROTARY MEETING NOTES, AUG 1
21 members were present plus one guest, Lois Brown, to hear Steve Rutledge. Steve, the founder of Adopt A Village In Laos, presented his report on last year’s work, some of which was aided by Trudy, Phyo and Michael & his wife, Elizabeth.
Steve has been travelling to Laos for many years to distribute water filters, to build water systems, to build toilet projects, and to distribute feminine hygiene products, with a focus on rural regions.
He said this past year was unusual because they had no rain from December 1-March 31 while he was there. The annual burning of last years’ stubble to clear the land for planting generated so much smoke that the pollution index was 571, four times the usual amount. Other problems were truck breakdowns and the added necessity of building a retaining wall for a toilet project built along a riverbank. Also, a recently constructed water storage tank’s operation ran into politics between two native factions requiring a call to the District Governor to resolve the matter.
Steve showed a film of these activities that demonstrated the legion of workers that dug 5 kms of trenches and built the cement storage tank. 688 water filters were distributed, and 9 old filters were replaced after 9 years of use. Plus, 250 female hygiene kits were distributed.
In the coming season, activities will include a toilet facility for 260 schoolboys who now only have 2 toilets, plus 2 other toilet projects; two water projects; the fabrication of feminine hygiene kits; and raising funds for university tuition of $6,000-$7,000 per person for some students.
For the benefit of new Rotary members, Steve described the water filters that last for 6-8 years for a family of 6-8 people. Pure water removes the diarrhea problem that affects everyone who drinks untreated water.
Club Business
Tim gave an update on plans for the Wellington celebration day at the park:
All the food has been arranged,
He needs some large containers to boil the corn,
Games have been arranged including arm wrestling,
Anyone with sun shelters to loan are encouraged to bring them,
Margo is running the kids’ games table so any appropriate games could be brought for her use,
Christine asked that the poster be ready for Aug 11 for the ad in The Times,
Howard will arrange a hand-washing station as we use at Ribfest,
Tim is checking if our insurance coverage is adequate.
For the September 16th Silent Auction & Dinner, Bill P. has dinner/dance tickets, and they are also available in the two outlets- Home Hardware Wellington and McDougall Insurance Picton.
Peter reported that all membership renewals have been paid.
Martha’s number was drawn for the 50:50, but she did not draw the ace of spades.
