President's Message

Another sign that Spring is nearly here: the electronic sign near the Picton Beer Store is announcing the closure scheduled for Highway 49 at the Bay of Quinte Skyway Bridge from 9:00 PM on Tuesday March 16 to 6:00 AM on Wednesday March 17. This one-night closure will be repeated the following week.

Last week’s appeal to the Club by Dina Bakhit and Carl Eggiman for basic necessities for the Lebanon Strong Campaign has been met with great success. Several members have provided items which Michelle Kosoy will deliver to Dina’s warehouse at the beginning of the week. Also, prospective new member, Shawn Ellis, has arranged for 16 hospital beds from Hallowell House to be received by Carl Eggiman. These beds, plus the numerous other medical and firefighter items obtained by Carl will fill a container to 80% capacity.

Below are photos of a number of our Club members displaying their Women in Rotary pins that Past District Governor Mary Lou Harrison has shared with our female members.

L-R: Lyn, Lana, Trudy, Yvonne, Margo and Sharon.

Last Week:
Carl Eggiman & Dina Bakhit
Lebanon Strong

President Howard opened the meeting at 7.07 with over thirty present in person and via Zoom, and welcomed Sean Ellis on his second visit to the Club.

Lana introduced the first of the two representatives of “Lebanon Strong”, Carl Eggiman of the Trenton Club. Carl has had a career of service in the military, the police, the coastguard and Firefighters without Borders as well as having been a businessman. He is a very active member of Rotary and a hugh supporter of efforts to alleviate suffering and need in Lebanon and around the world. He, in turn, introduced Dina Bakhit a Toronto-born businesswoman who uses her skills not only to run Global Logistics Management but also facilitate the transportation of desperately-needed supplies to overseas countries experiencing natural and man-made disasters. Dina explained her role and activities, particulary with regard to the situation currently facing the Lebanese people. She stressed how important to the “Lebanon Strong” project the Rotary Club of Cedars, Lebanon, is and gave information about how to contribute to this cause. (President Howard subsequently copied members with more details) Dina went on to praise the work of Doctor Brad, a Hamilton Rotarian and orthopedic surgeon, who has taken emergency medical materials that are in short-supply or non-existent. While hospitals are gradually being rebuilt, pop-up centres are the means by which some medical needs are being addressed. Dina was thanked by Barry.

Under Club business, Bill M. gave an up-date on Bottle Depot needs.

Yvonne announced that the first batch of 504 bottles of maple syrup had been sold and that a new batch could be bottled as soon as March 16th. The fundraiser had excellent coverage in the Belleville Intelligencer.

Phyo announced that this year’s Rotary Beach cleanup would take place on April 24th, weather permitting. He detailed some specific areas that need attention including interpretive signage. The beach committee has discussed the beach situation in company with Adam Goheen, the County’s Director of Operations.

President Howard announced that the April 6th Club meeting would be devoted to differing viewpoints on the Polio Vaccination Program.

David Hawkins had received his Covid vaccination, EREY funding had been forwarded to the Rotary Foundation and it was Dick McArthur’s birthday.

The meeting closed at 8.12.

Rotary Song Lyrics:

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.

Four Way Test
Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
