President's Message

TWO years!   March 15 2020, the County closed all of its facilities.  We were required to limit our interactions with others and leave our home only to get necessities.  Canadians across the country became fixated on the news channels to find out more information about COVID-19 and the world pandemic.  It is hard to believe that we have lived under this cloud for 2 years … it raises question to the saying that 'time only flies when you are having fun'!    With the recent announcements of the lifting of restrictions, I am optimistic that we can hopefully look forward to a normal spring and summer in 2022.

One of the steps back to some normalcy at will be the resuming of breakfast at our Rotary meetings.   Thanks again to Ken and his committee of Peter, Christine & Dave R, for looking at options, and engaging Hello Bonjour to provide us with breakfast sandwiches and coffee starting tomorrow.   Wonderful!  😊

Last Week:  Maribeth DeSnoo
(Prince Edward Learning Foundation)

The meeting opened promptly on International Women’s Day at 7.07 with 23 members present and a further 8 joining via Zoom alongside 3 guests. After the usual formalities, PP Howard introduced Maribeth DeSnoo of the HPEC Learning Foundation who has presented to the Club, in the past, and has been instrumental for many years in both the Federation and Rotary (PP Quinte Sunrise).

Maribeth began her presentation to up-date the Club on the work that the HPELF has done since November by introducing two of her colleagues, Sherry & Angie who addressed certain areas of their experience with the Food for Learning, Food for Home and Nutrition Pantry Schemes. An extraordinary number of meals or food vouchers has been provided to students and their families with food being accessible in schools such as PECI with the opportunity for students to take food home too. The Pantry at PECI has been open since the return to school in January and supports students from Kindergarten to Grade 12.  All the money for this scheme has to be fundraised as, while HPELF is an Ontario lead agency, this aspect of its work receives no Provincial support. The initiative also depends upon the active support of staff in the region’s schools to facilitate the acquisition, storing and distribution of food, as well as respecting the dignity of students accessing this support. Students can ‘shop’ in different ways and food is available more frequently than from a foodbank. There have already been many testimonials from students and staff to attest the value of the program. It is also supported by some manufacturers such as Procter & Gamble and community groups like Rotary. Over 1,000 students have received food or vouchers since November. To date, our Club has donated almost $22,000 to HPELF which is hoping that we will continue by pledging a further $3,500 to these programs.

Some questions from Barry, Yvonne, Peter, Howard, Lyn & Phyo to all three guests further elucidated aspects of the Nutrition Pantry scheme’s advantages in helping to feed families in need and reassured some members who had previously had some concerns about it. Maribeth was thanked by Chris.

Under Club business, Bottle Billy’s bottle depot volunteer needs were addressed for Wed & Sat. D & D books should be available around March 19th. Maple syrup timing depends on Mother Nature. Our candudate for RYLA (now re-named Rotary Youth Leadership SYMPOSIUM), Sean is considered quite suitable for this experience despite the fact that he will be one of the younger attendees. Linda spoke to the Club regarding the Russian Invasion of Ukraine and the need for humanitarian aid for the besieged country and passed around a sheet for donors to declare their intentions. Pres Elect Ken has arranged with Hello Bonjour for breakfast sandwiches to be available at $8.00 each starting next week. After the 4 Way Test, MPres Trudy closed the meeting at 8.20.

Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all
             concerned?

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
