President's Message

If you know me, you know that I like to dabble in all kinds of stuff, photography mostly. But I also enjoy working around the house building things.

This is a good time to get things done.  It started out as a little project of building a workshop and storage area around the furnace.  Well, that couldn’t be enough to do, so it continues. Should I say amateur carpenter, drywaller, electrician.  I don’t know if it is just because I am cheap or if I would just rather do it myself. They say you learn from your mistakes!!!!

Yup, I have made a few.

So today, while drywalling, I had to remove the motion sensor in the basement and also unplug the power to the modem so that I could drywall around the receptacle and where the sensor was.

The drywall turned out great, but when I plugged the modem back in, the box didn’t like me.  Go figure, who wouldn’t like me!!

I tried plugging it in and un-plugging it, resetting it and you think I could get it to come back on. Nope!

It ended with a phone call to Bell because we didn’t have wifi or a Bell signal to the house. It turns out that what ever the tech told us to do, didn’t get it to come back on.  So it is a night without internet, home phone service or TV and the service guy is coming between 3 & 5 on Sunday.

Now here is the good news.  While talking to the tech from Bell, we learned that I can connect my IPad to my cell phone using the cell as a hot spot.  Even better news is that it isn’t going to cost me anything.  It seems that Bell has, or is giving unlimited internet service until the end of April.

That means that I can use my IPad in the morning to do a Rotary Zoom meeting and I don’t have to worry about running out of Giga bites or time or whatever you call that stuff.  So, if any of you are on Bell service, this also applies to all of you as well.

If you need to use your cell phone or IPad for our Zoom meeting on Tuesday morning, you don’t have to worry about running out of time.

I hope everyone is enjoying this great weekend.

President Dave Robinet

Last Week: Club Forum

The first video conference meeting of the club was held for Club Forum on March 31, 2020.  There were 26 participants.  Other than a few technical glitches, such as some participants not having audio capability, and some participants not getting meeting notices in advance of the meeting, we were able to conduct a meaningful and effective meeting.  We still need to work out some video conferencing protocols, such as muting when not speaking, unmuting to speak, taking voice votes and polling, and generally knowing how to take turns speaking.

We will have another video conference Rotary meeting on Tuesday April 7, 2020 at 8 a.m.  Please look out for a meeting request from contact.wellingtonrotary@gmail.com.
  1. Meeting called to order by President Dave Robinet at 8:03 a.m.

  2. President Dave announced that Howard Ziedenberg has agreed to step in as President for next year, and Bill Mitchell will step in as Secretary.  Congratulations President-Elect Howard Ziedenberg and Secretary-Elect Bill Mitchell.  We appreciate your Service Above Self.

  4. David Smith provided an update on the hospital fundraiser effort, specifically the wine sales.  He also provided an update on the International and emergency aid portfolio. He indicated that he had discussed with Tim Cox about the pending Australian wild fires aid.

  5. President Dave indicated that the Diners & Duffers books have been distributed to members for sale.  There were discussions about how we can address the fact that many establishments are currently closed and sale and use of the book is delayed.  Ted later in the meeting indicated that he still had undistributed books at the Home Hardware store.  The Diners & Duffers working team to resolve all these questions & issues.

  6. Colin Fredericks provided an update for the Golf Day.  He indicated that he has informed both Barcoven and WoTL golf courses that in light of the current virus pandemic, we are cancelling the golf event.

  7. Barry Davidson indicated that plans for the Fundraiser Dinner are on hold pending the current virus pandemic.

  8. President Dave relayed the Board resolutions on funding:
    1. Board declined a funding request from Indigenous GoFundme for Nibinamic kids (for field trip to Toronto), but requested Liz Bosma to further enquire about other worthwhile causes for which IPPC needs support.
    2. Board declined funding request from Woodlands Culture Centre for restoring a building for residential school museum in Brantford.
    3. Board approved a donation of $500 to the Lynn Leavitt GoFundme initiative in support of helping Lynn Leavitt who is a cattle farmer in the community that was severely injured by his cattle.  Treasurer Trudy to follow up with Lynn & family.
    4. There were several other requests for funding that are pending presentations to the club soon.

  9. An open discussion about the bottle depot ensued.  Michelle Kosoy indicated that she was apprised that people are throwing away their bottles because the bottle depot is closed. It was resolved that Karen will post a notice on our Facebook page to encourage people to save their bottles until we reopen the bottle depot.  There was discussion about whether we should designate a day when let people leave their bottles at the depot doors and then we clear them into the depot the next day.  Kim Lee indicated that he is already doing that whenever he sees bottles being left at the door.

  10. Barry Davidson provided an update about the Wellington Help Line that was set up to provide support for anyone who needs help during this virus shutdown.  He indicated that there were only a few requests and that help line will be merged with the County help line.  An open discussion ensued regarding what type of help people will need, and it was suggested that the club should focus on a few areas such as food, distance education, helping healthcare workers, that our club might want to delve into.  However, we need to move quickly.

Rotary Song Lyrics:

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.

Four Way Test
Of the things we think, say, and do:
1.  Is it the TRUTH?
2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
     FRIENDSHIPS?
4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
