President's Message

Yikes, this has been a hot week! It looks like Saturday’s rain has broken the back of this heat wave and high humidity.

Saturday was another wild day at Bottles! I thought we had an incredibly busy day until Mike showed us some pictures from Wednesday. And thank-you to Charles and Margo who showed up during our late shift to help us bring the flood of bottles and cans under control.

Also, at Bottles on Saturday, we got some great news that Margo will be reconnecting with our Club, and she will be taking on the Communications and Literacy directorship – thank you Margo.

And I would like to thank Trudy Brown for all her wonderful help with the drafting of this year’s budget. She patiently reviewed every line of the budget with me, explaining many of the Club expense lines, and checking that the forecasted revenues and expenses made sense - many thanks Trudy.

I will be posting a list of “Club Roles and Primes” on our ClubRunner site after circulating it for updates. I have also prepared a key dates calendar which I will also post under Club documents in ClubRunner. You may find these two documents helpful references. One job I’d like to see filled soon is someone to take notes at our weekly meetings and pass them to our Bulletin publisher (Phyo). If you’re interested, please let me know.

In closing, this past week, my wife Dawn and I had to work through the ultimate in frustration when one of our cats became unwell and we had to give poor Wall-e three pills a day. It’s unbelievable how a fifteen-pound cat can out wrestle an adult. And just when you think he’s been outsmarted…he spits out the pill. Wall-e had his last pill on Saturday but he’s still leery of Dawn's presence.

Last Week:

Shelly Ackers (Quinte Access)

President Howard Ziedenberg called the Zoom video conferencing meeting to order at 7:07 a.m. with 23 Rotarians, plus guest speaker, present and accounted for.

Shelly Ackers from Quinte Access was our speaker for the meeting.  Quite Access has been providing transportation services for the Quinte area for 31 years.  In 2007, they started providing services in Prince Edward County.

Quinte Access provided about 12,000 trips last year.  They are still providing door to door service for seniors and other handicapped people in need of transportation thru the COVID pandemic. However, ridership is down about 90%.  They provide transportation needs for medical appointments, shopping, etc.

Recently Quinte Access was awarded a contract for 4 years to provide community bus transportation (beyond seniors) services in Prince Edward County. Routes have been defined, and they were supposed to start in April, but it has been delayed due to the COVID pandemic.  The route will serve Picton/Bloomefield/Belleville four times per day. There will also be other services thru Wellington and Rednersville that would link into this.  The service would link into Belleville buses.  Bus services in the Prince Edward County area would range around $15 dollars per trip.

Quinte Access currently has 11 vehicles and 36 drivers.  Quinte West has provided a building, but they outsource the maintenance of the vehicles to 2 local mechanic shops.

On other Club business,
  • Bill Mitchell will be returning to scheduling the bottle depot schedule.  If you would like to volunteer to work at the depot, please contact Bill.
  • The Club voted to approve the Memorial Gardens Project that Barry presented at Club Forum on June 30th. Carson Arthur as offered to purchase trees and grasses at his wholesale cost.  On the topic of which Rotarian would be memorialized, the Club agreed with Barry on the 7 original names of members who passed away while they were members. The Club voted to add Gord Lloyd to the list since he was ill, which caused him to terminate his membership in the club, and he passed away shortly thereafter.
  • President Howard will follow up with Legion President Buck Buchannon to understand when the Legion might re-open post COVID lockdowns.  He will also explore the Wellington Town Hall and MidTown as alternate venues for the Rotary meeting if the Legion is not re-opening soon.
The Bottle Depot has been extremely busy lately, as a backlog of bottles and cans recycling in the County surged over the COVID lockdown.  Here is ann example of the volume:

There are only 2 bottles remaining of the few Rotary White wine at Lacey Estates.
It will likely be sold out by this week.

The Rotary Red wine from Domaine Darrius is due to be out very soon!

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,

Four Way Test
Of the things we think, say, and do:
1.  Is it the TRUTH?
2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
     FRIENDSHIPS?
4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
