President’s Message: Oh, What a Night!

Oh, what a day! Wellington was bustling with a sea of pumpkin hats this past Saturday and Wellington Rotary played a big role in the festivities.

Thanks to Margo and her crew for decorating the float, John H for pulling the float and everyone who participated in the parade – and yes that was Gregor donning the bee costume. You made rotary proud.

Bill M organized our first 50/50 at this event with the winner – Brent Dunn - receiving $594. Proceeds will be directed towards the Storehouse Foodbank and GVGO (Giant Vegetable Growers of Ontario – a new acronym for me!). One of my favorite parts of this day is the weighing of the giant pumpkins. Thanks to John H, Chris, Colin, Jacques and old and new Ted for ensuring the pumpkins landed safely on the scale. The winner came in at 1,890 lbs!

Oh, what a night! Late October 2025 will be remembered as one of those shining Rotary moments — an evening when community spirit, generosity, and good fun came together perfectly. Rotary’s heart was truly alive!

Chef Michael Hoy delighted everyone with a meal that was nothing short of spectacular. Each dish brought people back for more, and the dining room buzzed with laughter and conversation.

Then came The Reasons — and what a reason to dance! From the first note, the floor was full, and energy filled the room. We were even serenaded by some local talent including our own Colin whose rendition of Fly Me to the Moon was right on key.  It was one of those nights that felt like it ended much too soon.

And what a sight — our online auction soared beyond expectations, raising over $10,000! These funds will support our local hospital and the Storehouse Foodbank — two causes that truly strengthen our County. Once again, our community showed its heart and generosity in thunderous fashion.

A huge thank you goes out to everyone who made this event such a success — especially Bill, Howard, Mike, Lana, Mary, Roger, Colin and Trudy and everyone else who helped with the Dinner Dance and Online Auction. Your hard work turned an idea into an unforgettable evening of impact and joy.

As we catch our breath, I can’t help but hum that familiar tune:

🎶 Oh, what a night
Late October, back in twenty-five,
Rotary’s heart was so alive,
I still remember, what a night!

Oh, what a night
Chef Michael Hoy, his food was truly grand,
He brought the flavour, just like we had planned,
We kept on going back for more, what a night!

Oh my, you felt the vibe the minute that The Reasons, hit the stage,
Dancin' shoes on, as I recall, it ended much too soon

And what a sight —
Our online auction soared way beyond the goal,
Ten thousand plus, we’ve really blessed our souls
Supporting health, oh what a night! 🎶

Last Week:  Dorothy Spiers

Rotary meeting minutes October 7, 2025
Notes by: Lyn McGowan

President Yvonne called the meeting to order at 7:07 with 30 Rotarians and 2 guests in attendance (prospective member John Hatch for his 3rd meeting and Dorothy Spiers, our guest speaker from Perfectly Preserved.)

Our guest speaker was introduced by John I. Dorothy began by thanking our club for its recent donation, which together with a donation from the Picton Rotary Club enabled Perfectly Preserved to buy a new tent which is being used weekly at the Farmer’s Markets in Wellington on Saturday and Picton on Sunday. Dorothy explained that Perfectly Preserved, which is comprised of 10 women, is affiliated with the PECMH Auxiliary. The group started almost 10 years ago, with a mandate to produce preserves, pickles and baked goods for sale as a fundraiser, with 100% of the proceeds going to the hospital for the purchase of medical equipment. They started out cooking in their own kitchens and selling only at the annual Festival of Trees. Evolving over time, they have rented space from the Food Hub industrial kitchen in Sophiasburg and now meet weekly in the kitchen of the South Bay United Church in Milford. They now sell at the Curling Club on Festival of Trees weekend, at the Women’s Institute sale at the Picton Fairgrounds in August and weekly from May to October at the Farmers Markets in Wellington and Picton. Thanks to generous growers who donate or give substantial discounts on their produce, donations of canning jars by the community and a grant from the PECMC Grant Program, Perfectly Preserved was able to donate $34,000 to the hospital last year and hopes to exceed that this year. Their operation has grown to be the second biggest fundraiser for the hospital, after the Second Time Around Shop. Their baking is extremely popular and Dorothy reminded us there is a Christmas sale, by pre-order, and a sale at the Crystal Palace on Nov. 16. Dorothy was thanked by Geoff.

Club Business

Christine reminded everyone there will be another breakfast from Sprigwich on Oct. 28 for which she will be taking pre-orders. Yvonne encouraged everyone to check out the Online Auction list. Peter will begin the process to move John H’s membership application forward. His information goes first to the Board for approval, then to the membership which has seven days to raise any potential objection.
