This week we will be hearing about the County Marathon, which made me reflect upon the meaning of the word marathon. Most would define this as a long-distance running race of precisely 42.195 km. Not being a runner, I often think of a marathon as a long-lasting or difficult task. There is a saying we have all heard: “Life is a marathon, not a race.” The image is a powerful one. In a sprint, every ounce of energy is focused on reaching the finish line as quickly as possible. In a marathon, whether it is running or a task, success is measured not in speed, but in endurance, preparation, teamwork, and the ability to keep moving forward steadily. This perspective has much to teach us as Rotarians and as a club.
When we think of Rotary, we know our work is never about quick wins. Yes, there are times when we achieve immediate results—whether raising funds for a local cause, organizing an event, or responding to a community need. But the real spirit of Rotary lies in long-term service. Just as a marathon requires pacing, Rotary requires vision and persistence. Our efforts in literacy, youth support, health initiatives, and community building unfold not in days or weeks, but over years and decades.
Consider Rotary’s fight to eradicate polio. More than 35 years ago, many said it could not be done. But Rotarians worldwide committed to the long road, mile after mile, with setbacks and challenges along the way. Today, we are closer than ever to the finish line because we understood this was not a sprint—it was a marathon worth running.
Closer to home, our club’s projects also reflect this truth. Whether it is building a new hospital, supporting food programs, supporting youth through scholarships and summer camp opportunities, or improving our beach, these are not one-time actions. They are investments in the future. Each year we add another mile marker, building on what came before, and ensuring that those who follow us can carry the baton further.
A marathon is also not run alone. Even though each runner has their own pace, they draw encouragement from those around them. In Rotary, we do the same. Our fellowship, our collaboration, and our shared purpose remind us that we are part of something larger. When one member tires, others step in to carry the load. When challenges arise, we remind each other that the finish line is still worth striving toward.
Finally, a marathon teaches us balance. Runners know the importance of rest, nutrition, and a steady rhythm. For us as Rotarians, balance comes in the form of service and fellowship. We are most effective when we nurture both: giving our time and talents to others while also enjoying the friendships, laughter, and support that Rotary brings into our own lives.
As we move forward this year, let us remember that our work is not about rushing to the end, but about staying the course. Let us pace ourselves wisely, celebrate the milestones, and keep sight of the vision ahead. Together, as a team of marathoners, we will continue to strengthen our community and live out Rotary’s motto: Service Above Self.

Last Week: Adrian Williams (Birdhouse City)
Rotary meeting minutes August 26, 2025 Notes by: Lyn McGowan
President Yvonne called the meeting to order at 7:07 with 34 members in attendance and one guest.
Two sign-up sheets were circulated – one for the Rotary Foundation Walk on September 28th and one for the next round of Fellowship Dinners.
Guest Speaker: Lyn introduced our guest, Adrian Williams, representing Birdhouse City. The Birdhouse City group of volunteers started doing restoration of the birdhouses in Birdhouse City in 2021. Since that time, they have restored 120+ birdhouses, installed 70+new posts, refreshed signs and benches, all with donated materials. All replacements/restorations should be complete by next year. Quinte Conservation owns the land and maintains the grounds.
The core group of 8 Birdhouse City volunteers looks after all organizational details, and they have 30 builders who do the actual restoration. The core group is looking for an organization willing to take on some ongoing responsibilities, leading toward a sustainment/succession plan for Birdhouse City. Adrian stressed that they are not looking for funding, but for a community partner to take over organizational details and maintenance. Yvonne indicated we will put it on the agenda for discussion and Adrian was thanked by Kim.
Club Business:
Christine raised the idea of having Sprigwich provide our breakfast sandwiches once a month. Yvonne proposed trying it out for Club Forum this month. Members will have to order in advance, so that the right number are ordered. Cost for the Sprigwich breakfast sandwich is $8.00.
Rotarians in Action: Congratulations to Ken Robertson, winner of the 2025 Super Senior Men’s Golf Championship for Wellington on the Lake Golf Course. Congrats also to Yvonne for winning the Ladies’ Long Drive in the Picton Rotary Golf Tournament.
We all wished Lana “Buen Camino” as she heads off to the Camino Trail tomorrow.
