This Week:  S/Sgt John Hatch
(Ontario Provincial Police)

                  President's Message

After some poor weather predictions I have studied the 14 day forecast and I am excited to see the daily temperatures rising to 64F very soon.  (+18C for those who use metric thermometers)  David Smith reminded me that last year we played our first round of the season at Roundel Golf Club in Trenton on April 12th, no such luck this year but things should be opening by mid April.

This Easter weekend will bring lots kids and grandkids back to the County, hopefully the Easter Bunny visit there here, and some families may get to dress up for church services on Easter Sunday.   All the golfers and golf fans will get to enjoy another Masters for Augusta Georgia.    I was fortunate a few years ago to attend this special event, it truly is one of the most special sports competitions in the world, in a place that feels almost heavenly.

It was great to see Norm Dodgson back at our Tuesday meeting after spending three months in Myrtle Beach.   Zoom has been a great addition to Rotary, it allows snowbirds like Norm and Dave Robinet to attend our regular meetings.     Roger Tessier was back this week as well and he brought some good news from Aruba.   He has approval for a week's vacation at Oyster Bay Resort to be included in our Fundraising Auction this September...Well done Roger.

Both Roger and Lyn McGowan (President Elect) will be attending the Rotary District Assembly in early May.   This is an important event that included approval of Rotary District 7070 annual budget. (Member annual fees and insurance levees etc)

Another reminder of our upcoming clean-up of the Wellington Rotary Beach on April 22. Invitations to our post clean-up BBQ will go out this week for all members and our Friends of Rotary.

Finally, Liz Bosma coordinated  the Rotary Club of Wellingtons award of two $1000 bursaries for two Indigenous University Students.   I was honoured to sign the Certificates that will be presented to these young people who are attending Lakehead University.

Last Week:  Anne Van Vlack (The County Foundation)

Notes by Barry Davidson

27 members were present with 2 on Zoom and 1 guest, Sue Berezny.

John Heeringa reported to Ken that he was finished his chemo and hoped to be back soon.

Anne VanVlack presented on the 2022 Vital Signs Report, a product of The County Foundation. She provided a copy to members present and the full report is at PECdata.ca. It is a follow-up to the Covid-19 Impact Report in 2021. Its purpose is to provide the data to spark community discussion and inspire community action. This relevant and timely information informs decision-making by community leaders and the Foundation, and identifies opportunities for funding, collaboration and support within the community.

Details in the Report encompass the subjects of:

  • Community - population stats
  • Housing
  • Economy
  • Health & Well-Being - she recognized the work of our Nurse Practitioner Committee
  • Education
  • Food Security- now that Covid support cheques have ceased, more people are turning to foodbanks.
  • Safety & Justice
  • Transportation - she encouraged us to use the public transit as it is still on trial and needs riders.
  • Environment

She introduced the new “Neighbourhood Small Grants” of $50 to $500 to support PEC residents who want to make their communities better places to live by organizing neighbourhood activities, celebrate diversity or share skills. Apply online at thecountyfoundation.ca .

Her call to action is:

  • Share the info of the Vital Signs Report
  • Contribute data
  • Volunteer - Anne recognized the volunteer effort that Rotary members exhibit.
  • Create a fund or contribute to one.

Other Business

Smart Serve - any members who want to be certified or re-certified so they are available for Rotary events are asked to advise Howard. He will advise the Board to get payment for the training.

The beach clean-up sheet will be out next week. Christine asked by Zoom for someone to take pictures that she would publicize.

Maple syrup - a few bottles are still available at Home Hardware.

Norm thanked his helpers for handling the D&D books.

David MacKinnon reported on a successful presentation of the Nurse Practitioner project to the Council last week. He believes that Council acknowledges our project is complimentary to their search for medical doctors. The second draft was aided by some County Foundation stats.

Trudy reported that the earthquake relief cheques went out to seven local families for transmission overseas totalling $12,975, including Rotary’s $3,000 contribution. She thanked Margo for leading this effort.

Today, Lana’s number was drawn (on her birthday) for the 50:50 but she did not draw the ace of spades.

Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all
             concerned?

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
