President's Message

Last Tuesday’s speakers, Bob Wallace and Shirley Ross did a great job of educating us on The Rotary Foundation (TRF) and how it fuels the District and Global grants. David Smith is following up on our Club’s contributions acknowledged by TRF, and he’s actively looking into arranging a District Grant for the New Hospital. Thank you David.

Dave MacKay of Many Happy Returns dropped off a $100 donation at the bottle depot on Saturday November 28 with the direction to “designate it where it can be best used”. Our bonds to the community are strong, and although we haven’t been able to go out into the community this year with our traditional celebrations on Canada Day, Pumpkinfest, Family Day, etc., the Bottle Depot has been our successful backstop for maintaining our visibility in the community.

Below is a photo of Rotarian Lana Whitteker at the Wellington Storehouse Foodbank delivering to Linda Downey, the 37 gifts provided by the Rotary Angels. Thank you Lana for organizing this wonderful donation for the kids in our community; and thank you to our members for their generous support.

At a District level, I will be attending the Presidents meeting on Monday, December 7th, and the Tuesday Talks, Environmental Action in Rotary on December 8th. I will report back to you on the items that may be of interest. Also, of note in the latest District Weekly Message, was this item: “Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup. Plans are underway to team up with all Clubs/Districts within the Great Lakes watershed on April 24, 2021 to clean up the shores of our waterways.” This last item is of special interest and likely more details will follow shortly.

In closing, I look forward to this Tuesday’s meeting where on behalf of our Past President, Dave Robinet, I’ll announce the upcoming Board for the 2021-2022 Rotary year.

President Howard

Last Week:
Bob Wallace & Shirley Ross
(EREY & RI Foundation)

President Howard opened the meeting by welcoming guests including Linda who can now become a fully-fledged member and Nyden K from the road as well as presenters and Assistant District Govenor Brenda Hillyer.

Lyn introduced Past District Govenor Bob Wallace of the Port Hope Club and Past President Shirley Ross from Colborne who came to present to the Club on the Rotary Foundation.

Bob gave a very useful, detailed and comprehensive explanation of this enormously-important financial engine of Rotary International which makes the funds raised by clubs, individual members and other donors available to clubs and districts to support their own projects. It enjoys the top status of a Four Star charity which passes on over 90% of its income to end-users. The Foundation is comprised of three divisions; the Annual Fund, Polio Eradication and the Endowment. Through district and global grants, the Annual Fund supports clubs’ projects that fit the seven areas of focus plus global projects must be sustainable. There are currently district grants available for Covid-related projects.

In the past, the Foundation has benefited from initiatives such as EREY (Every Rotarian Every Year) but this has been negatively impacted by recent events. The Foundation also awards Paul Harris Fellowships for Rotarians or others who donate US$1000 or multiples thereof. Rotarians will accumulate their donations to the Foundation until achieving Paul Harris Awards.

Bob answered questions and was thanked by Tim.

Yvonne reported that Enid Grace will provide comestibles for the Dec 15th meeting provided members order beforehand. It was suggested that members might want to wear seasonal attire as that will be our last meeting before Christmas.

Trudy up-dated the Club on the masks and Lana likewise on the 36 Angel donations the members had made.

Michelle notified the Club that there is a new Syrian family in the area which desperately needs single-bedroom accommodation, locally.

After announcing birthdays and anniversaries, and the Four Way Test, the meeting closed at 8.15.

We're Getting Closer to Our Target $400Thousand for the New Hospital

Pictured here is Treasurer Trudy Brown at the Bottle Depot with her red paint to update our progress on the thermometer for the fundraiser target for the New Hospital.  It looks like we are past the $300Thousand mark!

Rotarians that were present at the Wellington Rotary Beach opening
(circa 2008)

Last week, President Howard included a picture of the Rotarians present at the Wellington Rotary Beach inaugural, but he was not able to identify everyone in the picture by name.  Our resident historian and sage, Reg Gemmell, was able to help out with that task:
Pictured here, front row left to right: Rev. David Hawkins, PP Doug Wilson, Reg Gemmell, Joan Hemlin, PP and Honourary Member Butch Riddell, PP Jim Bancroft. PP Art Sinclair, John Mulder, Gord Lloyd.

Back row left to right: PP John Dulmage, John Brett, Bob Temple, Jim Van Kregten, Peter Mertens.

Rotary Song Lyrics:

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.

        1.  Is it the TRUTH?

        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
