President's Message
This year, Giving Tuesday is celebrated this Tuesday, November 29th. I don’t recall hearing about Giving Tuesday before, but what a great idea, so I went exploring. The following information is taken directly from the Giving Tuesday website:
What is Giving Tuesday?
GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement that unleashes the power of radical generosity around the world.
GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past nine years, this idea has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.
GivingTuesday strives to build a world in which the catalytic power of generosity is at the heart of the society we build together, unlocking dignity, opportunity, and equity around the globe.
Who organizes Giving Tuesday?
GivingTuesday is an independent nonprofit organization that is dedicated to unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. The movement is organized in partnership with GivingTuesday’s global network of leaders, partners, communities and generous individuals.
Is there a list of eligible or participating nonprofits?
There is no list of participating nonprofits. All nonprofits, community organizations, registered charities, non-registered charities, and volunteer groups are automatically eligible to participate in GivingTuesday.
Who can participate in Giving Tuesday?
Everyone! GivingTuesday has been built by a broad coalition of partners, including individuals, families, nonprofits, schools, religious organizations, small businesses and corporations. There are people and organizations participating in GivingTuesday in every country in the world.
Participating in GivingTuesday is about joining a movement for generosity, and there are so many ways to do that. Whether you give your voice, goods, your time, or your money, being generous is a way to fight for the causes you care about and help people in need.
Doesn’t this sound a lot like what Rotary stands for? So, give some thought to what you are you going to do this week, to celebrate Giving Tuesday and make a difference in the world.

Last Week: Classification Speeches - Martha Murphy and Lois Brown
Meeting Notes by Barry Davidson - November 21, 2023
There were 29 members in attendance, two on Zoom and one visitor, Robin Heeringa, to hear Martha Murphy and Lois Brown give their classification speeches.
Martha is a recent transfer from the Rotary Club of Campbellford who still lives in Campbellford but has rental property in the County on CR 20 that she is managing. She has two step-children, has had a quarter horse and has a “shared” dog. She enjoys sailing, golf and wine tasting with visitors. She was born in Brampton as one of seven children. Her parents were from the Ottawa valley and they had a cottage in Hastings County to which her family came to give the kids lots of running room.
She graduated from Sheraton College and went to work for the municipality of Brampton in the Clerk’s Department. When her parents moved to Campbellford in 1987, Martha moved to assist them. She worked for Tweed for four years, as a Financial Planner for a few years, then for 22 years and still doing it, for the Community Foundation of Campbellford and area. She became a Rotarian 24 years ago, attracted by the opportunity to give “Service Above Self”. She has filled various roles as Secretary/Treasurer and Acting VP while working on the polio campaign and water projects in Mexico particularly. She fondly remembers attending the 100th anniversary of Rotary in Evanston, Illinois. She looks forward to continuing service in the community.
Lois Brown was born in Toronto, with three siblings and grew up in Scarborough, a hyperactive child who loved riding her bike. Their family took vacations in Nova Scotia to visit her maternal grandparents. She was horse crazy, riding dressage for two decades as well as running 10-Ks, three+ marathons and triathlons.
She graduated with a B.Sc. in Psychology and went to work for Bell Canada (remember the telethons?). She worked in Project Management where she found her true calling. However in 1998 downsizing led her to Y2K, to Bell Sigma, to CGI where she met her friend, Howard Ziedenberg. In 2000, a package offer led to a short time at American Express then to Telus where she worked for 16 years, leading a crew of project managers and a budget of $250 million. In 2013, her marriage had ended but a long companionship with her Hungarian Vizsla dog supported her in a meaningful way. In 2022 she sold her house in Thornhill and moved to Picton and with Howard’s encouragement, came to Rotary.
Club Business
Lana reminded members that if they have not registered for the Christmas dinner on December 15 to send her an email with their potluck choice. A cheese or condiment tray, including devilled eggs, would be a welcome addition. Ken said that we would convene at 5 pm for drinks and eat about 6:30. He asked someone from WOTL to arrange for the music sound system to be activated for the evening.
Norm announced that Tim had recruited three new advertisers for the D&D books.
Bill Pennell announced his annual Movember fund raising event involving the growing of moustaches in November to raise awareness of men’s health issues, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health.
John Heeringa’s number was drawn for the 50:50, but he did not draw the ace of spades.
