                  President's Message

I have not been good with weather forecasts recently and hopefully by the time this message comes out we will have had our Beach Clean up on Saturday without too much rain. (or Sunday rain date).    It seem like the warmer weather will not be back for another week or two.

Unfortunately, Lyn McGowan was unable to attend the President Elects Training event in Chicago this past weekend.   She has been under the weather but hopefully will be back good as new very shortly.  Lyn has completed numerous President Elect Training modules and will be ready for a great year starting in July.  (we need some eggs too)

After the Beach Cleanup event our Club will start to focus on the Annual Rotary Fundraising Golf Tournament that will take place on June 15th.   During the month of May Golf Committee members will be canvassing for donations of prizes and hole sponsorships which will be $100 per hole again this year. (tax deductible)   Golf Committee will be meeting shortly to establish the Cost for Golf and Dinner (chicken or beef at the Legion).

Our Club will be supporting the Canada Day Events again this year, in particular with a Rotary Float under the leadership of Christine and Shawn.   We will also be having our special Rotary Ribfest in the park following the parade, Yvonne has agreed to coordinate this project with Roger Tessier.  (Lana will help with her experience from previous years)
The Rotary Club of Wellington supported a donation of $1000 to the Canada Day Committee to help with costs of OPP, Bands etc.

The Board will be discussing the decision to continue with Zoom meetings after our April meetings.   It may be that this option is made available on as needed basis rather than routine offerings each week.   More to follow.

Finally special thanks to Trudy and Phyo, Mike and Liz Latner for their great presentation on their visit to the Water Filter Project being run by Rotarian Steve Rutledge. This was a very special presentation as it was the first time 3 Past Presidents of the Rotary Club of Wellington all spoke to the Club at the same time.

Last Week:  Mike Lattner, Phyo Kyi & Trudy Brown
(Journey to "Adopt a Village in Laos)

Notes by President Ken Robertson

Last Tuesday we had 26 members in Attendance, with 3 online Barry Davidson, Lyn McGowan and Christine.

We were honoured to have Steve Rutledge (Rotary Whitby Sunrise Club) as our guest while Trudy, Mike, and Phyo presented their experience in Laos.   Steve is the Rotary Leader of the International "Adopt a Village in Laos" that is bringing drinking water and sanitation facilities to many of the villages in Laos.

Trudy and Phyo along with Mike and Liz Latner travelled to Laos as part of a vacation.   They spent time in Laos with Steve and his project team.   They had an opportunity to personally present water filters that were recently donated by the Rotary Club of Wellington.

Their slide show included highlight of their visit, meeting with local villagers, sharing in their traditions, enjoying some local delights and what sound like some great Laos beer.

Special thanks to them all taking the effort to visit Steve's Adopt a Village in Laos Project and to give us a first hand explaination of this wonderful operation in the poorly serviced villages in Laos.

Members of our Club were sad to hear of the passing of past Rotarian David Baldwin. David joined the Rotary Club in 2012 and was a Rotarian until 2019, when he and wife Nancy decided on extended travels with their newly acquired RV.  Tim Cox reminded us all of what a wonderful man he was and how he helped in projects like the installation of the Scoreboard at the Field of Dreams ball field.

There was discussion about supporting the Canada Day Parade that has been such a big part of the annual holiday celebration in Wellington.   It was agreed that the Rotary Club would support this event this year.    We will repeat our participation in the Parade with a Float (Christine/Shawn) and we will have our Ribfest in the park following the parade. Yvonne and Roger have offered to coordinate this event with some help from our former Ribfest leader Lana.

A motion by Mike Lattner, That the Rotary Club of Wellington Donate $1000 to the Canada Day Committee to offset the cost (Security/Bands Etc) of the Canada Day Parade. Seconder David Robinet        Carried:   Unanimously.

Reminders went out to volunteers for the Beach Clean-up on Saturday and the BQ that would follow.   Hopefully it will take place rain or shine but if rain is heavy we will do it Sunday.

After happy bucks and 50/50 ticket draw, the ace of spades was still not drawn.  The meeting adjourned with the four way test.

Rotary Beach Cleanup
(April 22, 2023)

The 2023 Rotary Beach Cleanup and BBQ occurred the same day as the PEC Trash Bash day on Saturday April 23rd. Many Rotarians and Friends of Rotarians made the cleanup a quick effort, and we had a fabulous BBQ of hamburgers and sweet eats.

Rotary Tent was pitched by the gazebo at the beach as headquarters for the BBQ and rest spot for all the workers.

Rotarians and Friends of Rotary members enjoying a bit of rest and BBQ burgers after a short speech from President Ken, thanking all the volunteers for their quick work.

President Ken and Rotarian Bill Hurst were the designated BBQ chefs, and Margo Langford, with assistance from Liz Bosma took care of the condiments and the sweet eats.  Special thanks to Lana Whitteker, who was not present, but did all the coordination for the food.

Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all
             concerned?

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
