President's Message

Reflections on Altruism

As I begin in my new role as President, I have been reflecting on the power and the fragility of altruism. Volunteers are the heart of Rotary. Rotary relies on the commitment and collaboration of thousands of individuals – to power our shared goals and unite for good. Trudy and Phyo recently attended the RI Convention in Calgary and will share their reflections on Rotary at an international level. In today’s Bulletin, I want to take a moment to express my immense gratitude to all of you for your volunteering efforts, sharing your expertise, time and hard work – and to reflect on the nature of altruism.

What drives people to share their time so generously? How can we sustain volunteer commitments in the face of ever-expanding pressures and competing priorities? And crucially: how can our club foster a culture that continually nurtures and earns volunteer engagement?

Our club relies on our members and our Friends of Rotary – to enliven our work through their expertise, experience, time and hard work. Volunteers constitute all aspects of our club, from our weekly meetings to the many initiatives that we are involved in. The Board contributes to policymaking, governance, and advocacy to ensure that our club remains relevant to our membership and community. Our weekly meetings rely on the efforts of many including Lois’s contributions to communication through the Bulletin, Dave R arranging the guest speakers, Ken bringing breakfast and the meeting captains and their committees to ensure everything runs smoothly. Our major fundraising efforts, including the Bottle Depot, D&D books, maple syrup, Fundraising Dinner and Golf Tournament, require the efforts of many to ensure success. Our countless initiatives including beach maintenance, Canada Day festivities, family day, kids summer camp, pumpkin fest, spelling bee, storybook walk, wellness and youth exchange would not happen without volunteers.

In these and countless other ways, volunteers are the heart of our club and the key to advancing our goals. I am immensely grateful to our membership and Friends of Rotary, whose altruistic commitment brings our Rotary vision to life. But I am also acutely aware of the ever-expanding set of pressures, competing priorities, and threats to wellbeing that face each of us. So why do so many continue to share your time and expertise so generously?

As I reflect on my own journey, I have come to understand what motivates me to continue and I suspect this resonates with many of you. The work we do feels meaningful. I have always learned something from it, and I have always felt useful. I have made enduring connections with my fellow Rotarians. In short, my motivation is that the time I put in always feels like time well spent.

Rotary is not me, nor the Board, nor an individual member. It is all of us together, shaping the future of our community, both locally and globally. For this I would like to say thank you to each member of The Rotary Club of Wellington.

President 2025/26

Rotary International Convention -  Calgary 2025

Phyo & Trudy attended the RI Convention held in June in Calgary this year.  They will provide a quick debrief of the event at July 15th Rotary meeting.

Last Week: Yvonne Buys (President's Address)

Rotary meeting minutes July 08, 2025
Notes by: Lyn McGowan

President Yvonne called her first meeting to order with a rousing “Happy New Year” and 36 members in attendance.

Peter provided an update on Kathleen who has been unable to attend for a while as she has been caring for her mother, who has health issues.

David Smith related a story about Jim Lowden, whose obituary appeared in the Times last week. Jim was a silent friend of Rotary who was a big supporter of Back the Build and also helped with construction of the Memorial Garden.

Yvonne started off with a series of “thanks you’s” related to the very successful Canada Day festivities last week – she thanked Norm for the suggestion to source the Canada Day ribs from the Dugout; Shawn for providing the popcorn and candy floss which generated sales of $645; the 50/50 team ( Liz, Iza, Dawn and Christine) who generated $700+ for the club ; and Ann Robinson, the winner of the $787 prize in the 50/50 draw, who donated back $100.

Chris introduced our speaker, President Yvonne Buys, by sharing her answers to “10 Questions” we might not have learned about Yvonne from her Classification speech – a few of those are: she was born in Scarborough, educated at U of T, has 2 daughters, her favourite movie is Scarface (!) and favourite book is Memoir of a Geisha.

Yvonne noted that this year’s Rotary International motto is “Unite for Good, but she has a local motto in mind for this year, as well – “Rotary Refresh”. She has toured around the County reviewing anything that bears our club’s name and feels that most of those artifacts badly need a “refresh” –

  • The informational signs at the beach are so worn as to be almost illegible. She has already reached out to some local naturalists and proposes striking a small group of Rotarians to tackle the update;
  • Also, at the beach – Percy continues to be filled with garbage, contrary to the posted sign. Yvonne proposes a change to the sign, maybe less wording, different placement. Kim has agreed to look at this.
  • Bottle Depot – potholes in the driveway; Tim advised that Mark does not want to fix the driveway at this time;
  • Community Gardens – is there an opportunity to refresh or expand? Geoff has agreed to look into how it is being used;
  • Display Cases at the Legion and the Community Centre – Liz has agreed to take the lead on refreshing those.

Yvonne mentioned that Club Runner has a new platform, which we are encouraged to check out. Phyo says there are still some glitches, but it is more informative.

Yvonne intends to invite our Charitable Foundation to make a presentation to the club later this year, which will help to ensure our directions are aligned.

She was pleased to note that 80+% of our members are either leading or involved in one or more committees/activities, as reflected in the recently updated Club Roles document.

Club Business

William volunteered for the open shift at the Bottle Depot on Wednesday 11-1. He was also presented with the Crushed Can Award for having missed a shift on Saturday. Trudy thanked the early shift for staying overtime to help with the rush,

Howard advised the shirt/hat order is still pending from the US supplier.

Hillier Hall is having a lasagne dinner on July 13th, starting at 4 pm.

Bill H’s ticket was drawn in the 50/50 draw but, alas, he did not pick the ace of spades.

Four Way Test

       Of the things we think, say, and do:

        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and
             better FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all
             concerned?

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
