President's Message
At last, there’s snow on the ground! It’s been such a mild winter in the County. I was in Ottawa for the New Year, visiting old friends. They’ve lived there 35 years and, while they had seen the occasional green Christmas, they had never before had a green New Year.
It’s official. The year 2023 was the hottest year on record, globally, according to analysis released in December by the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service. Every month from June through November set a new temperature record. This was accompanied by a record number of extreme weather and climate events – flooding, drought, hurricanes, cyclones and wildfires. The human and financial costs are almost incalculable.
In this context, I went looking to see what Rotary is doing to address issues around the environment. In 2015, the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG) “was formed to empower members of the Rotary Family worldwide to take actions to sustain our environment, particularly to stabilize our climate.” The ESRAG website ( https://esrag.org) offers a number of resources worth looking at. This month, ESRAG is offering a series of weekly seminars, on Wednesday mornings. I have already registered for this week’s seminar “Eating for Tomorrow” subtitled “Restore the Environment and Feed the World: Eat Plants and Plant Trees.” I also plan to sign up for the seminar on February 7th, “COP 28 In Review” which is about the climate summit in Dubai last month.
Anyone want to join me? I encourage you to check it out. Rotary has so much to offer, to help each of us make a difference in the world.
Lyn McGowan

The Bottle Depot cashbox needs replacing if anyone knows a new source.
David MacKinnon advised that the expected announcement about nurse practitioners did not happen on December 20. He awaits a future announcement.
MPP Todd Smith has invited all service clubs to attend a 3 pm meeting on January 11 at the Waring House to discuss plans to impact communities. President Lyn will attend and other members are invited to join her.
Margo reminded members that a total eclipse of the sun will occur April 8 and is expected to draw huge crowds because PEC is in the direct path of the total eclipse. Since public accommodation will be at a premium, she suggested that those who have space could offer other Rotarians accommodations. Other ideas to make it a day are welcome.
Trudy reminded members that February 19 is Family Day and we usually help to celebrate it. Ken advised President Lyn that the President usually organizes our participation in conjunction with Lisa Lindsay of the County. He has the material from last year for her use.
Tim’s number was drawn for the 50:50, but he did not draw the ace of spades.

Four Way Test
Of the things we think, say, and do:
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and better
FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all
concerned?

Rotary Song
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
