                  President's Message

The weather report this week says it all, temperatures in the mid-twenties celsius all week til Friday, Finally summer temperatures have arrived in the County.

The Rotary Club of Wellington Golf Committee is still looking for more hole sponsors ($100 + Tax receipt).  The funds raised will support Kids Summer Camps.

Norm Dodgson has used this day to mark the Memory of two close friends.  His sign reads,"In memory of Goodtimes with Friends Tim McKillop and Gerry Bark."   (See sample below).    This is a great way to support your Rotary Clubs Summer Camp Fund and recognize some special people in your life.     If you want to honour some special people who have passed let me know and we will have a Memorial Sign made up for you.

The District Governor has forwarded and invitation for all Rotarians to attend the Toronto Pride Parade.  It takes place on June 25th this year.   This past two years one of the Rotary Themes has been supporting more DEI. (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion).    It is hoped Rotary will have a good turnout to show our support.   To register for this event go to "Rotary at Pride Toronto Parade."

Finally we are all wishing Chris Compeau and Yvonne Buys a safe journey as they leave this week for another extended hike.   This time their challenge is the 130 plus kms Coast to Coast trail across England known as Hadrian's Wall.  We will look forward to hearing another presentation on their exciting trip.

Last Week:  Brett Lyons(Quinte Sailability)

Notes by Barry Davidson

28 members today were present with one guest, Munir Touteh, to listen to Brett Lyons with Alli Wagner from Quinte Sailability. Brett is the public relations spokesperson who, at age 27, has been with the program since age 5.

Brett stated that the Club encouraged individuals with physical or developmental disabilities to identify as a part of a team and part of a sailing club. Their boats were adapted to be sailed by them and since there is no speed limit on the water, they are told “why limit yourself?”

Brett thanked the Rotary Club of Wellington for its donations in the past as service clubs cover 28% of the costs. Students are asked to pay less than 50% of the costs. There are 42 volunteers including 18 regular force members from the Trenton air base, that last year gave 2,303 hours of volunteer time. Before Covid, the Club had 50 members in age from 8 and up.

Brett showed us a picture of the “Rotary Way” sailboat that we had helped to fund. As with all their boats, it is untipable and unsinkable in construction. Other boats for beginners are like a bathtub with sails. One boat is equipped so a person can control it by breathing through two straws.

The instructors are well-rounded people devoted to their students and teach in four programs:
  • Learn to sail
  • “Cansail” certification
  • Recreational
  • Therapeutic
Quinte is one of the 17 locations in Canada in the “Ablesail Network”

Racing is practised by 6-8 people. The Thursday night club sailing is to build confidence. Competition is sailed at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club, the Nepean club on the river with light winds and the Mobility Cup in various locations in Canada to which CN Rail provides donated transport of their boats. This summer it is in Toronto.

Club Business

  • Ken reported that 21 children are signed up for the summer camp.
  • The golf tournament has sold out but we still need hole sponsors and prizes if any members know somebody. Participants are urged to get their fees paid in to Trudy by e-transfer or cheque.
  • The photobook that has been prepared for Sharon Campbell has gone to the printers.
  • Members attending the Past President’s dinner are to pay $40/person to Trudy.
  • Tim gave a report on the Recognition Day for Wellington residents who helped the Rotary Club in its 20 years. It will be noon to 6 pm in July or August at the ball diamond with a picture taken at 3 or 4 pm of all participants in front of the Rotary scoreboard in centre field. He is hoping to have more than one band so give him contact information.
  • David MacKinnon said that the application to the government for the nurse practitioners is to go into the government before the end of May. The number of “orphan” patients now is estimated to be 9,000 within 18 months.
  • Today, William’s number was drawn for the 50:50 but he did not draw the ace of spades.

Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all
             concerned?

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
