Club Bulletin for week of June 27, 2023
This Week:  Past President's Dinner
(No Morning Meeting)

                  President's Message

Warm days of summer have returned and it looks like we have a hot summer ahead of us.

This will be my last President's Message of year so I wanted to take time to thank all members of the Wellington Rotary for your dedication to community service during the last year.  I want to also recognize the Friends of Rotary who are so important to our success, we could not continue to operate the bottle depot without their help.

Special thanks to Past President Trudy for her guidance and support during the year, I could not have completed the year without her.   I also want to thank the Board of Directors, for their leadership, President Elect Lyn McGowan, Treasurer Yvonne Buys, Secretary Chris Compeau, Membership Chair Peter Campbell, Policy/Administration David Robinet, Communications/Public Relations Christine Dimitris and our newest Board Member with Literacy/Education Norm Dodgson.

On Friday evening I was fortunate to attend the District 7070 District Governor Changeover and Annual Awards night hosted by Whitby Sunrise Rotary Club.   Special thanks went out to District Governor Iosif Ciosa for his leadership during the past year and congratulations was in order for the new District Governor John Burns from the Rotary Club of Bowmanville.

I was very proud when it was announced the  Rotary Club of Wellington  was the winner of three of the District 7070 Annual Awards.

First the Annual Award for Internal Communications in recognition of the weekly bulletin that is prepared and posted each week.   Special thanks to Geoff Telling, Barry Davidson and Phyo Kyi who work hard to ensure our members and the community get the summary of weekly Rotary activity.

Secondly, the Annual Award for Environmental Action in recognition of the amazing recycling effort of our club at the Bottle Depot.     Our Club processes over 750,000 containers each year diverting hundreds of tons of glass, cans and plastic from the landfill.

Finally, the Tibor Gregor Community Service Award for the Best Community Service Projects.    This award recognizes the completion of two major Fundraisers in support of the local hospital, and for raising close to half a million dollars in support of "Back the Build" for the new hospital and for badly needed new hospital equipment.   Operating the Bottle Depot, Annual Dinner/Auction, Dinners and Duffers Books, and Maple Syrup sales are just a few examples of successful fundraising efforts by the Rotary Club of Wellington.

Thanks again everyone, it has indeed been an honour to serve you as President of one of the best Rotary Clubs in the world.

Ken Robertson
Wellington Rotary Club President

Last Week:  Club Forum

Notes by Barry Davidson

28 members today were present for the Club Forum. It was earlier this month because the Past President's Dinner is next Tuesday so there will not be a breakfast meeting that day.

The President thanked Colin and his committee for a very successful golf tournament. The profit, mainly from the hole sponsors, but including about $350 from the putting contest and $200 from the 50:50, is about $3,500.

Chris reported on a project of the Rotary Club of Belleville with the Humane Society called Rotary Rescue Readers. It couples rescue dogs with child

ren who can use more reading coaching for the benefit of both parties.

Ken reported that cheques were mailed for donations previously approved: $1,000 to the HUB and $1,000 to Quinte Access.

Yvonne presented her Treasurer’s Report which will be in full detail on our website. Mike moved acceptance of the Treasurer’s Report, Ted seconded it, carried.

Norm reported that the profit from the D&D books will be about $13,000.

Bill P. announced that our dinner/dance fund raising event on Saturday,  September 16, at the Community Centre has a theme of Dig It/Back the Build. Tickets are $100.

Bill M. repeated his request for volunteers to decorate our float for the Canada Day parade. Come to the Bottle Depot area at 8:30 am Saturday morning, July 1. Yvonne said plans were complete for the Rib Fest, but if there is someone else who wants to volunteer, let her know. The rib meal will sell for $20, including a soft drink or water. This is an increase in the price due to escalating costs. Roger commented that Ribfests in other Rotary Clubs have increased their price to $25 or $30.

Roger is leading the selling of 50:50 tickets for our foodbank, targeting to raise $500 in a draw on July 1. All members are encouraged to take tickets to sell - 3 for $5, 7 for $10, 15 for $20. Write the buyer’s name and phone number on the back of the ticket stubs.

The Breakfast Committee asked for the member’s choice on the menu. A vote confirmed no change from the current menu but an acceptance of a monthly fee of $20 because the breakfast sandwich is more costly. The couple of members who do not drink the coffee or eat the meal are excused from paying the $20 monthly.

Christine reported that there will be a thank you sent to the golf hole sponsors.

A publicity picture of the $7,000 given to the Legion for the new floor is to be taken this morning.

Norm reported that the pages of the new book for the Storybook Walk were laminated free of charge by the Library. Norm and Ted will check the condition of the stations and move them a bit closer to make it easier for younger people to get through the whole story.

Ken thanked the Committee who arranged for the 21 kids to go to camp.

Lyn reported progress on the Accessible Beach Mat project. Councillor Corey is supportive and will connect with Adam Goheen, the head of County Operations, to get his agreement. Our committee is invited to the next County Accessibility Committee meeting on September 18 to get their approval. Liability issues need to be addressed. With final approval, it will be next summer before the mat would be installed. A Rotary District Grant application has been submitted to help pay for it.

Ken asked for a new volunteer to take meeting notes starting July 4. for the new Rotary year. He thanked Barry for covering off while Geoff has been on sick leave.

Barry gave a brief report on the visit of foodbank volunteer, Cynthia Riordan, and he to the Orangeville Foodbank to look at their order picking system. Whereas the Storehouse Foodbank prepares the hampers for clients, in Orangeville the clients take a grocery cart around their warehouse and choose their own groceries. The latter option preserves the client’s dignity and avoids unwanted food being wasted. Although Linda Downey would like to offer her clients a similar choice, the physical facilities in Wellington do not provide the space. However, this investigation is part of the planning of the Rotary Foodbank Committee’s planning for a new food bank building, when we find the land.

The members were asked to consider a $1,000 donation to the PE Learning Centre. The motion was made by Michelle, seconded by Bill P., carried. In addition, the Board had approved $500 to the United Church to help provide their camp for kids this summer.

The Past Presidents’ dinner at WOTL on June 27 is all organized: 4 pm decorating, 5:30 start, 6:30 dinner. BYOB. A dishwasher has been hired to finish the cleanup.

David MacKinnon said our nurse practitioner $1.3 million application for the Wellington clinic has been submitted. He is dismayed that the County Health Team has also submitted an application. Yvonne explained that our submission would address the number of “orphaned” clients whereas the doctor’s will help them to run their offices. The latter application has not been transparent so we are uncertain of their details.

David M. continued by saying that the Committee would now turn to addressing our “wellness” and what we should do about improving it.

President Ken ended the meeting, his last as President, by giving an address in which he reviewed his incoming plans and how he made out against them. He thanked the members who chaired the committees and all those who helped. He was heartily congratulated on his year in office and thanked for his service and dedication to Rotary.

Bill Hurst’s number was drawn for the 50:50, but he did not draw the ace of spades.

Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all
             concerned?

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
