President's Message

Wellington is growing in size.
No kidding you say!

If you were at our meeting on the 7th of January, you will recall Mayor Ferguson talking about development and growth in our community of Wellington.
Over the next ten years, our community is supposed to grow by approx, 2400 new homes. If you say an average of 3 people per household, that increases our population by just over 7200 people. It means new jobs, renewed interest and involvement in the community.
With any luck, we can count on and draw on new comers to the community to become involved in our club to help provide leadership and community involvement.
This past week, we saw a new addition to our Rotary Face Book page with a fresh new video designed by Karen Selick, about why people should join Rotary. I have received several great comments on the addition of the video and I can say it is helping us to get noticed. It is forward thinking like this that will help the club move forward.  With the growth coming to the community it will also help us grow as a club, but it will involve some work on our behalf.
Should we start a planning committee for future growth?
I have sent the video link to Paul Denault from the Wellington on The Lake ( WOTL ) Community asking if he can post the video in the weekly e-news letter that comes out.
I am hoping that it will attract more interest from members of the community. We have had good results with Friends of Rotary coming from the ( WOTL ), which has helped us immensely in staffing the bottle depot.

Many hands make short work!

Last Week: Club Forum

President Dave circulated a volunteer sign-up list for Family Day.
Tim was congratulated on being one year "off the table".
Re local donations, Pierre observed that we are over halfway through the year but so far have only disbursed one third of the annual budget for local donations. We don't have to wait to be asked for help. It was proposed that Lana and Bill solicit input from Linda Downey (respecting confidentiality) re people who might need help but don't want to ask.
Dave R advised that the deadlines have been met for the 2020 Diners & Duffers and money is being collected from advertisers. Due to delay in closing of the sale and difficulty communicating with the purchaser, the WOTL Golf Course will not be in the book for this year.
President Dave thanked Sharon for doing a wonderful job filling in on the Pubic Relations portfolio while Karen was on leave.
Parker provided a membership update: 37 permanent members and one prospective new member.
Dave S. provided a Hospital Fund update: Donations of $13M received in December which included $4.5M from collecting pledges and $5m from a new donor. The current balance of the hospital fund is $250M, including $20M in pledges. The Board authorized execution of a "Gift Agreement" between the Club, our Charitable Foundation and the PECM Hospital Foundation re our $400M multi-year commitment and another regarding a $50M donation from an anonymous donor.
Dave R and Liz provided some details re Family Day. There will be a free reading program with County Kids Reads giving out free books, handprints as art, and helpers will be coming from the ROC Youth Centre in Picton.
Dave McK noted that good progress is being made  in discussions with the province re: expansion of the intensive care unit at Belleville hospital, which is operating above capacity.
Karen advised our old projector went to Larry Epstein, a local stand-up comic who can use it in hist act.
Motions from the Board:
- $500 donation to InterRotary Spelling Bee approved
-$500 donation to CML Snider School for ribbons for Track & Field Day approved
-$1200 for Australia Fire Relief from Emergency Humanitarian Aid budget recommended and approved
- $750 donation to Hope Air recommended to Foundation
- $1M donation to Mustafa family to be sent to help purchase tents for their family members in Idlib, Syria recommended.  After extensive discussion the motion was defeated mainly because there is no NGO or Rotary group we can direct the funds to.

Rotary Song Lyrics:

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.

Four Way Test
Of the things we think, say, and do:
1.  Is it the TRUTH?
2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
     FRIENDSHIPS?
4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
