Pres. Ken opened the meeting at 7:05 with 26 members present and 2 guests: Shawn Brown (RYLS youth sponsored by our Club) and Vicki McDonald (from Belleville Youth Centre). The usual singing of the Rotary song, O' Canada, and toast to the Queen/King was followed by Rotary Grace by David Hawkins, and breakfast of sweet and savoury provided by the Wellington Bakery was consumed.
Pres. Ken congratulated the breakfast committee for the wonderful improvement in our weekly breakfast. In inquiring about health of members, Pres. Ken asked whether anyone has spoken with Sharon Campbell. Michelle Kosoy and Lana Whitteker indicated that they had last spoke with Sharon about 4 - 6 weeks ago.
Liz Bosma introduced our speakers. Shawn Brown attended the Belleville Youth Centre, then became a volunteer, and has since been hired as a Youth Peer Mentor in July 2021. He attended Rotary Youth Leadership Seminar (RYLS), sponsored by our Club in May, and described how the experience at RYLS helped him grow his skills and connected him to a group of people with different perspectives, taught him to "listen to voices behind the norm".
Vicky McDonald joined Belleville Youth Centre & Belleville Wellnes Hub in Jan 2020. Working with kids has always been her passion. She wanted to give the youth they deal with "the summer of a lifetime" (after the 2 miserable years of the pandemic). They used the $500 donation from Wellington Rotary for youth excursions to the Big Apple in Coburg, Healing with Horses Santuary in Hillier (interacting with the pigs and goats and horses), and North Beach (twice). With help of someone who was connected with the Toronto Argonauts, they also went to an Argos game, while the CNE was running, which made for a very challenging effort corralling the kids to stay together. They were great experiences for the youth. Many thanks to the Rotary for their contribution, Bellville Youth Centre serves youths ages 10 - 18 yrs old. They also host a Youth and Young Adults 18 - 24 one evening a week as part of the Pathway for Employment program.
In other Club business, Barry provided an update on the efforts to find the FoodBank a new home. Pres. Ken indicated that we were looking for volunteers to look at what we have in the Club's archives not. Dave Robinet volunteered to digitize the material after it has been received. Peter Campbell volunteered to review the material; Pierre Lebrun will ask Reg Gemmell if he will participate; John Inwood was pressed into assisting to determine what should remain in the archives,
Pres. Ken reminded everyone about the Foundation Walk on sunday afternoon at 2p.m. For the Golf Day, everything is in place. All we need now is for the weather to cooperate. Every golfer will get a prize. Thanks to all the committee members and volunteers..
After the four way test, the meeting adjourned shortly after 8:20 a.m.
