President's Message

Wellington Rotary continues to be a strong presence in our community, as well as supporting various initiatives abroad.  An article in this week’s Times will share details of our contributions over the past year.   A key area of achievement is that we are on track to exceed the $400k target that was established in 2017 for the New PEC Hospital.

This all provides our Club with the opportunity to define a new focus for our fundraising efforts.  Over the past few weeks, there have been different discussions about:  Storehouse Foodbank support; an outdoor exercise park; and helping to address affordable housing (home sharing, Habitat for Humanity, Kate’s Rest).  At our meeting on July 20th, the Initiatives Committee co-chairs, Ken & Phyo, will bring forward a summary of potential opportunities. I encourage all Club members to come prepared to engage in the discussion, to ensure that we are all supportive of the avenue(s) that we pursue.

Last Week:  Jill Raycroft (Habitat for Humanity)

The first meeting led by Madam President Trudy (2021-22 Rotary Year) was opened on time with another beautiful rendition of O Canada by Liz. Sgt at Arms, Barry, congratulated MPres Trudy on her accession and reported the attendance of thirty by Zoom including potential new member, Peter Campbell. This morning’s program from Habitat for Humanity, Hastings Prince Edward, (H4H HPE) was welcomed by David H who introduced Jill Raycroft and Hazzem Koudsi. Jill is CEO of Belleville Chamber of Commerce and has been actively involved with H4H since 2016. Her own early life experiences as one of five children raised by a single mother left her with a deep understanding of the critical importance of secure housing. Hazzem, having spent thirty years working in the public sector for the Federal Govt. has, just recently, been appointed Executive Director of H4H HPE. They had been invited to speak as part of the Club’s search for new initiatives and projects particularly in the area of affordable housing.

Jill began her talk by explaining that H4H has been working to develop new projects to serve an even larger number of clients due to Covid and changes brought about by Covid, in Belleville and elsewhere. The organization’s goal to provide home ownership to as many as possible is ever more difficult to achieve. The good news locally is that all five families who were backlogged have been able to move into their new homes. Jill then said that it was a very opportune time for H4H HPE to partner with the Club on a project to be decided upon and invited questions. Hazzem explained that after only two weeks in the job, he would defer to Jill to answer for him. There was a discussion period with highly pertinent questions from David S, Chris, Barry, Yvonne, Peter, Kim, Bill H, and Lyn. Jill gave full answers and referred again to the $175,000 bequest which is available towards a H4H project in the County.

Jill and Hazzem were thanked by Chris.

In Club business, Bill’s current bottle needs were met. Ken is still looking for volunteers for the Picton vaccination clinic. Phyo’s up-date on Kate’s Rest referred to Margo’s collection of items and that she is preparing an inventory. After congratulating Phyo, Colin & Jacques on their birthdays, the meeting closed in the usual way, at 8.11

Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all
            concerned?

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
