President's Message

What a beautiful weekend for the launch of Spring!
Round two of the Maple Syrup sales are underway. On Tuesday, Yvonne will be providing the Club an update on how things went with her sales booth outside of the Wellington Library last Saturday.

After last week’s Club meeting, I was greeted by Gertie the Wellington wild turkey on my way out of town. Sadly, Iheard the other day that Gertie is no longer roaming the streets of Wellington. Tom (below), a friend and denizen of the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre was heartbroken at the news.

By now, many of the Club’s members have had their first vaccine shot or are in the process of arranging it. At the
Rotary Regional meeting of Club presidents on Monday, March 15 th , one of the items discussed was the extensive preparations by the Cobourg Club for their area’s vaccination program. Working with their local Health Unit, the Cobourg Club is leading a community collaboration to recruit volunteers to assist at the vaccine clinic which they had built in a day. On the call, Cobourg mentioned they have already signed up 400 volunteers!
Some other District items:

Last Week:
John Cairns
(Rotary DEI Committee)

President Howard opened the meeting promptly at 7.07 with over thirty attendees in person and by Zoom including from as far away as Trinidad & Tobago. Sean Ellis’s third visit was recognised. Chris Compeau introduced the guest speaker, John Cairns, who has had a long and distinguished ‘career’ in Rotary, including Past President of the Belleville Club, District ADG and many other key positions. John has ‘defied the odds’ to overcome challenges that have included mountain climbing as well as the many other goals he has set himself or been given. He represented the Diversity, Ethnicity and Inclusivity Committee, other members of which were present at the meeting by Zoom.

John began his talk by explaining Rotary International’s role in promoting DEI to combat prejudices of all kinds and recognise societal differences in positive ways. He emphasized the need for change at all levels and the District’s commitment to developing policies and best practices. He also demonstrated how this played into the ‘pillars’ of Rotary; integrity, leadership, service, fellowship and diversity. John answered questions, including one on the need to combat gender bias. It was suggested that the Club might establish its own DEI committee and set goals to increase the number of diverse members. John was thanked by Bill M.

In Club business, Bill’s bottle needs were addressed and he thanked all the Friends of Rotary who had worked 110 shifts at the depot. Dave will be distributing Duffers & Diners now. Nyden explained the fund-raising project to raise income from advertising of different kinds at the Wellington golf course (or others). The next batch of Rotary maple syrup will be available for purchase by week end. Lebanon Strong has been/is receiving items from members and prospective member. Unfortunately, the Syrian, Al Jazeen(?), family’s arrival in Canada has been delayed.

President Howard closed the meeting at 8.24 in order to take his wife to Kingston for her Covid vaccination.

PICTURES OF THE WEEK

These pictures were submitted by Rotarian Tim Cox.  It seems Gentleman Tim has been working in the sugar shanty deep in the maple woods at early in the mornings.   The definite payoff for this hard work is serenity of the woods at that time of the morning and the opportunity to witness a beautiful sunrise over the horizon.   Thanks, Tim!

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.

Four Way Test
Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
