The meeting was attended by 27 Rotarians to hear a presentation byDebbie MacDonal Moynes, Executive Director of The Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Association. An outline of all the services can be found at: https://www.communitycareforseniors.org/services-for-seniors.php
Debbie mentioned especially David Hawkins who was one of the founding members of the Association, and Howard who is a very active volunteer for them. The four “take aways” she wanted us to remember are:
- No one knows what they need until they need it.
- Don’t hesitate to ask for help and encourage others to do so as well.
- Volunteers live longer, and healthier and happier lives.
- Asking for help is a sign of health.
Debbie authors columns in the Picton Gazette and other County newspapers, with advice and support for Seniors, and she also appears on Cogeco shows.
Community Care for Seniors is funded 58% by Ontario Ministry of Health, and the rest is funded through donations, proceeds from the Thrift Shop, and some client fees where applicable. Current annual budget for CCS is about $650 thousand, and Debbie continues to work to secure an on-going base funding from the MOH.
In other Club business:
Barry Davidson announced that the fundraising auction and dinner/dance on the weekend raised $17,000, a little more than the budget of $15,000. He said it was a great party on Saturday night and he thanked all the volunteers who put the events together successfully.
Colin Fredericks announced that the final profit from the golf tournament was about $4,000.
As the representative of our Club, President-Elect Lyn McGowan reported that she enjoyed meeting a lot of Rotarians at the District Conference on the weekend. Roger Tessier was there too and remarked how he liked being a part of Wellington Rotary because so many of our members are active in all our events.
Trudy reminded the members to give her nominations for Rotarian of the decade.
Howard reported on a rain-soaked weighing of pumpkins as part of Pumpkinfest. He thanked the volunteers Colin, John H, Dave R, Peter, Phyo, and Mike who directed traffic and crewed the weigh-in, as it was tricky doing it in the rain.
Dave Robinet had the he winning ticket for 50:50 draw, but was not successful in drawing the Ace of Spades this week.
The meeting adjourned at 8:15 with the Rotary four way test.
