President's Message

It has been a very eventful week for the Wellington Rotary Club.

Our President Lyn McGowan had an accident at home and was taken to hospital and eventually had successful hip surgery.   She is expected to be released from hospital soon and she says she will be joining us on Zoom for Tuesday Meeting.     We are all wishing her speedy recovery and in the meantime I will be assuming some Presidents duties.

Our major Project on the local beach has now been completed and we are having a Grand Opening on Wednesday at 3:00 PM, we hope everyone will come out to see how Rotary makes difference for persons with disabilities.

Planning continues for the upcoming Golf Tournament on June 13th.   We are starting our canvasing for $100 Holes Sponsors.   These funds will be used to help send Kids to Summer Camp this year and donors can receive a tax receipt for their donations.    Colin is also looking for prize donations, if you or any of your contacts would like to donate a prize it would be appreciated.

Yours In Rotary,

Ken Robertson
Past President, Rotary Club of Wellington

Last Week: Holly Baines (Alternatives for Women - Quinte)

Rotary Club of Wellington                                                                 Tuesday, May 07 2024
25 Members and 5 Guest were in attendance.

Guest Speak Holly Barnes (Alternatives for Women) gave a presentation to the Club.

Explained the Mission of their organization which has been around for 40 years operating out of a Picton location.   They provide support services for victims of Intimate Partner Violence which is a growing problem especially in rural settings.

Counselling Services include referrals to accommodation in Shelters in cases that are assessed as High Risk.   They also offer transitional housing assistance.   They have some accommodation at their location and can refer them to other housing when required.

In addition to transitional-housing they offer counselling, transportation, financial advice, and when necessary, can transport victims and their families to shelters sometimes as far away as Ottawa.

To encourage reporting or to make contact in an informal setting Holly and her staff provide Yoga Sessions and Workshops.   Victims may make their initial contact at these sessions because in many cases victims of Intimate Partner Violence are reluctant to ask for help.

Their organization is planning more Youth Outreach to inform them about difference forms of violence, not just physical but sexual and mental abuse as well.

Alternative for Women receives Provincial Funding for Staff and their Operations but they need donations to help with maintenance of their facility and other expenses.  They will also accept NEW bed linen, towels, blankets, and personal hygiene products.

Birthday Wishes Went out to William Mulholland

Mike Latner made early announcement of Special Award that will be presented to David Smith later this month for his outstanding Leadership in Rotary’s fundraising effort for the local hospital.  (Details will follow)

Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all
             concerned?

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
