President's  Message

Most of you should be aware by now of my recent email announcing the passing of Past President Brian McGowan.

We are all in shock of the tragic news.  Our heartfelt condolences go out to Lynn and the rest of the family.

When we loose a member of Rotary, it is like loosing a family member.  Not by blood by any means, but by the shear essence of the relationship that is created by their involvement in the club, the friendships, the involvement in various functions and activities and projects.

I came to this club as an outsider, a newbee to the County.  There were two people that immediately made me feel welcome, and Brian McGowan was one of them.

As a new president, he saw that I was struggling with some aspects of the new position. He guided me through a few things that made some of the procedures a little easier to understand. He had a world of knowledge and experience in business and the way he treated me was comforting and reassuring. He will be truly missed by everyone.

Last Week: Robert Morrow
(Tomatosphere Project)

Robert Morrow provided some insights into the Tomatosphere Project. Mars will be the next major global space program after the International Space Station and the establishment of a base on the Moon. Canada is positioning itself to play a signature role in the exploration of Mars and in the provision of life support and closed environment systems for space travel.

As humans seek ways to travel deeper into space, we must discover ways to expand life-support systems.  One possible solution is a plant-based system. Tomato plants are an ideal choice as they provide wholesome nourishment and water through transpiration from their leaves. Through photosynthesis, tomato plants also convert light energy and carbon dioxide exhaled by astronauts into oxygen that is needed for survival. Tomatosphereâ„¢ uses the excitement of space exploration as a way to teach the skills and processes of scientific inquiry. In the Seed Investigation, students examine the effects of the space environment on the germination of tomato seeds.

In addition, Robert presented a Paul Harris Fellow award to Dale Smith, who was instrumental for Heinz providing over 10 million tomato seeds to the Tomatosphere project.  Dale and his wife Leah has recently moved to Wellington-on-the-Lake.

Tribute to Past President Brian McGowan
With deep sadness, we pay tribute to Past President Brian McGowan, who passed away on September 20, 2019.  Brian was a triple Paul Harris Fellow, and was well liked and highly respected for his leadership in our Club.

Rest In Peace, Brian. We will miss you.

Rotary Song Lyrics:

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serves the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.

Four Way Test
Of the things we think, say, and do:
1.  Is it the TRUTH?
2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
     FRIENDSHIPS?
4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
