President's Message

Rotary’s Theme for December is “Disease Prevention and Treatment” Month.
As you know, Rotary’s top priority is the eradication of polio. We are 99.8% there!

Other disease prevention and treatment efforts include:
  • Setting up health camps and training facilities;
  • Designing and building infrastructure;
  • Supporting studies;
  • Helping immunize people (Polio, COVID, etc.);
  • Improving drinking water;
  • Improving sanitation infrastructure.

The bottom line is that Rotary believes that good healthcare is everyone’s right and that disease prevention is important because it can impact the health of people, families, and communities.

Our Health Committee, chaired by David McKinnon, deserves our immense gratitude for their insights on health. From their ongoing tireless fight with government bureaucracy (local and provincial) for finding solutions to our doctor shortage, to health seminars on healthy diets and dementia, to name a couple.

Rotary has always been in the forefront of assisting locally and internationally whenever the needs arise (floods, volcanoes, forest fires, earthquakes, Civil wars, etc.) We, at Wellington Rotary, have a long history of supporting international and national projects, be it by sweat equity, donations, or investing in shelter boxes. Some that come to mind are Laos, Cambodia, Haiti, Hawaii, Philippines, Indonesia, etc.

Thank you, fellow Rotarians, for all that you do!

Roger Tessier
President 2024/2025

On Second Thought: I’m a handyman according to my wife. She gave me a “to do list” of seven items. So, I did numbers 1,3,5, and 7. Sorry, but I only do odd jobs.

Last Week: Club Forum

Rotary Club of Wellington, November 26, 2024
Notes by Lyn McGowan

President Roger called the meeting to order at 7:07 with 26 members present.

Michelle shared her Rotary Eureka Moment. Her career as an artist didn’t give her much time for volunteering, so when she moved to the County 9 years ago she was looking for something to be involved in. She doesn’t remember who sponsored her (it was Barry) but she saw how much Rotary was doing and found the club was a good fit for her. She loves a community that doesn’t give her too much flak, that understands. Her mother is Hadassah, which is a Jewish service club, and Michelle had to assure her that Rotary has similar values and focus and there wasn’t a Hadassah chapter in the County.

The Rotary song was sung, twice. We had to start over because Tim wasn’t happy with the cadence the first time.

Announcements

Health of members - Lyn advised that Martha had retina eye surgery on the 21st and is recovering well.

Christine announced on Cathy’s behalf that we need more mains and desserts for the Christmas potluck on December 13th. The setup crew should be there by 4 pm, the party starts at 5:30 and it is BYOB.

Bill P circulated a Movember pledge sheet. Bill reported that he, his father and his uncle have all had prostate cancer. This is Bill’s 15th year participating in Movember and in that time he has raised over $14,000.

Forum/Report on the November board meeting

Lyn, in Chris’ absence, reported on correspondence sent and received during the month.

Bill P presented the Treasurer’s Report for the month of October. Highlights: Just four months into the current fiscal year we are at 51% of the full year budget for the Bottle Depot. The net proceeds from the Dinner/Dance were #13,495 which will be donated to PECMHF. Mike moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report, seconded by Trudy, carried.

Norm reported on the Duffers & Diners program for next year, noting that the number of sponsors is up from 12 to 20 and thanked Mary for her efforts in that regard.

Norm also reported that we already have one good candidate for RYLA and are seeking a second. Bill H’s granddaughter will be asked if she is interested.

Fellowship Dinners – three have been held so far with one more this week. Norm described another new fellowship opportunity – an afternoon of bowling and pizza on a Thursday in January. Show of hands indicated a high level of interest.

Funding requests approved:
$500 for the annual Quinte Regional Science and Technology Fair was approved by the board
$1,000 for the Storehouse Foodbank – moved by Trudy, seconded by Dave M, carried
$1,200 for Shelterbox – moved by Mike, seconded by Dave S
$1,000 for Rotary Wheels for Learning – moved by Bill P, seconded by Margo, carried

Other Business

Roger presented Trudy with a Paul Harris award, her second. This was followed by extensive discussion about how Paul Harris awards are earned.

Trudy reported on the recent trip to Scotland by the Canadian Rotary Curling Team, with 18 members from the Stratford to Kingston region. They played for 11 days throughout Scotland, 44 games in total, lost only 1 round and won the “trifecta” – they beat the last Canadian team from 2018, the last Scottish team from 2022 and the current Scottish team. Very impressive!

Meeting adjourned with the four way test.

       Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all
             concerned?

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
