                  President's Message

SPRING HAS ARRIVED, yes finally we see the grass turning green, some people wearing shorts and of course Golf Courses announcing their openings.   Our Wellington On the Lake Course is opened for play on Monday 17th of April.  Timber Ridge, Trillium Woods and Roundel are also now open.

Time to start planning for our Rotary Fundraising Golf Tournament that takes place on Thursday June 15th.   During the month of May will be looking for hole sponsors and prize donations, funds raised at this event helps us send underprivileged kids to camp this summer.

We had a great presentation from S/Sgt Hatch Detachment Commander of the PEC OPP. His overview of Police Operations included calls for service and crime stats but more importantly some of the Prevention and Community Partnerships that are so important in Public Safety Services today.   As promised he is forwarding media releases that may be of interest to our members.   This is great information for your review:

ORILLIA, ON) - Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers faced a busy Easter long weekend as they conducted their province-wide seatbelt campaign and worked around the clock to keep the motoring public safe.

Sadly, three people lost their lives in motor vehicle collisions over the weekend and one person was killed in a snowmobile incident.

Over the four-day campaign, officers laid 1,507 seatbelt charges against drivers and passengers who placed themselves and all other occupants in their vehicle at risk.

Aggressive drivers posed a significant threat on roads, with 5,186 speeding charges and 129 stunt/racing charges laid. One hundred and forty-one (141) impaired driving and 137 distracted driving charges were among the 10,323 offences officers held motorists accountable for over the weekend.

"The OPP thanks all drivers and other road users who contributed to safe highways and roads over the busy long weekend.

The OPP conducts traffic enforcement every day of the year and remains committed to saving lives on Ontario roads, waterways and trails.

The OPP Easter Long Weekend Seatbelt Campaign ran April 7-10, 2023."

April 22,  ROTARY BEACH CLEAN/UP AND BQ, planning continues. Please remember to let me know if you are coming for the BBQ so we know how much food to order and prepare.   Clean up is from 10-1PM and BBQ from 1-3PM.

Had a note from Colin Fredericks who was in Singapore.   He visited the Queenstown Rotary Club.   He was impressed with their buffet dinner especially the butter chicken, fish curry and assortment of fruit and desserts.  He said later he had to have one of the traditional "Singapore Slings" to top of a wonderful day.    Wishing him a safe journey and looking forward to hear more about his trip to Malaysia.

Wishing Lyn McGowan a safe and productive trip to Rotary Headquarters in Chicago this weekend.  This three day trip for President Elects from District 7070 is part of the orientation and training for Rotary Presidents, getting a close up view of operations of Rotary International helps to strengthen the future of this wonderful organization that we all enjoy.

We received some information that indicates the Annual Canada Day Parade may not be held this year.    This great tradition was always special for local families and their visitors.   It was a great kickoff to SUMMER in the COUNTY.     I am meeting with our Councilor Corey Engelsdorfer on Thursday to discuss this problem.  Hopefully we can find a way to get this event back on track, especially this year when July 1st fall on Saturday.....Will have more news on this for our Tuesday meeting.

Last Week:  S/Sgt John Hatch (O.P.P.)

Notes by Barry Davidson

28 members today were present with 2 on Zoom.

Staff Sgt. John Hatch, the commander of the local OPP detachment, spoke to us and explained the role of the 40 OPP officers in the County. He emphasized that Safety was of primary importance to the policing work.

The OPP has a three-year “Detachment Action Plan” which includes the following things:

  • Crime Reduction
  • Highway Safety
  • Other Priorities
  • Mental Health
  • Domestic Violence
  • Impaired Driving
  • Fraud

In addition, each municipality has an OPP “Community Safety and Well-being Plan” which allows communities to take the lead in defining and addressing specific local needs. (Google PEC Community Safety and Well-being Plan). The four strategies that are being implemented in PEC are:

  • Emergency Response
  • Senior Support
  • Poverty Reduction
  • Collaborative Mental Health & Addictions

He gave statistics for the number of incidents of some and said they were making progress in reducing the number of them. He particularly mentioned that the addition of two women trained in coping with domestic violence who attended when called on by the officers has reduced the severity of the results by 80%. This is the Integrated Mobile Police and Co-response Team. He offered that all residents who would like to receive all email incidents reports could receive them upon asking.

Other Business

Smart Serve - Howard repeated that any members who want to be certified or re-certified so they are available for Rotary events are asked to advise him.

Norm announced that the information on two Trenton golf courses were left out of the D&D books, Quinte Hills and Trenton. Phyo will send the info to all members by email and buyers of the book can use the reproduction of the pages to get the benefit.

The beach clean-up sheet was circulated for volunteers. Margo will supply a second BBQ and will coordinate the supply of salads. Members were asked to advise her if you would like to supply a salad.

When Barry mentioned that he was told the Canada Day parade was not going to happen because of the lack of volunteers to organize it, Ken said he would find out from Corey what the situation was to see if Rotary could help. Members commented that it was a worthwhile event to which they look forward to each year.

The Millennium Trail Committee is presenting an argument to County Council tonight at 7 pm in the Highland Hall against the commercial use of a 6-passenger ATV to do wine tours on the Trail. The meeting is open to all.

Today, Bill Mitchell’s number was drawn for the 50:50 but he did not draw the ace of spades.

Rotary Spelling BEE
(Susanna Moodie Elementary School)

Rotarians Trudy Brown, Yvonne Buys, and Director of Literacy Rotaran Norm Dodgson were at Susanna Moodie Elementary School in Bellevillel to help conduct the Spelling Bee last week.  (Apparently, Norm Dodgson was at one time the principal at the school).

The Bee was finally UNMASKED!
(Past President Trudy Brown points out that it's extremely hot under that Bee head, and hence the profuse amount of sweating.)

Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all
             concerned?

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
