President's Message

A large contingent of Rotarians turned out this past Wednesday to attend the graveside service followed by the Celebration of Life for our friend Reg Gemmell. On behalf of the club, Mike delivered a heartfelt and moving tribute to this outstanding Rotarian.

The rest of the week, preparations were underway for our club’s first Community Yard Sale, which took place on Saturday. Picking up donations, organizing, sorting, pricing, setting up… Again, a large contingent of members (and their partners) was involved in the lead up prior to the event, staffing on the day of the event, and in the cleanup afterward. A huge THANK YOU to Yvonne and Chris for providing the leadership and the perfect venue. Yvonne reports that the event grossed over $4000 which, net of expenses, will make for a very nice donation to the local Foodbank.

On a personal note, I would like to thank PP Ken for stepping in to take over my duties while I was in hospital and am now at home recuperating. It’s been a great relief to know all those things I’m supposed to be doing but can’t are getting looked after so capably in my absence.

Thank you, as well, to all of you who’ve sent “get well” messages, visited, brought food or flowers, offered rides, and picked up groceries. I am so honoured to be a member of such a caring, giving group of people. This club really is the best!

Yours In Rotary,

Lyn McGowan
President, Rotary Club of Wellington

Last Week: Various Club Events Discussion

Rotary Club of Wellington Meeting
May 21, 2024
Notes by Chris Compeau

The meeting was called to order by acting President Ken at 7:07 am.  24 Rotarians were present plus 3 on Zoom and one guest. ‘O’ Canada’ was sung and David Hawkins recited the Rotary grace. Breakfast was served.

Ken reported that Ted and Donna as well as Howard and Dawn are both celebrating 41 year anniversaries this week, on the 22nd and 28th respectively.

Bill Mitchell indicated that a cashier was needed for May 29th – this was filled by Lana.

Ken reported that the installation of the accessability beach mat last week was a very proud moment for our Rotary club.  He thanked Dave Robinet and Lyn for their leadership in this project.

Norm provided an update on the story-book walk.  The 16 stands have been placed on the beach board walk.  He indicated that this new location seems to be well received by the public.

Ken observed that our Rotary club is very busy in the coming month.  He indicated that the proposed memorial for Reg, Charles and Barry may need to be deferred until late summer/early fall.

Yvonne provided an update on the upcoming yard sale.  She indicated that there have been excellent contributions from both Rotary members and community members.  Pricing of items will take place today.  Additional tables will be picked up by Chris and Colin on Friday.  Several Rotarians have volunteered to assist with the yard sale on Saturday May 25th.

Ted provided a summary of the responsibilities of cashiers at the bottle depot.

Colin provided an update on the status of the upcoming golf tournament.  He reported that there have been several golf hole sponsors this year.  Loot bags are being prepared by Christine Rutter and Lana.

Ken reported on the June 25th president’s dinner which will be at the WOTL Rec Centre.  Tickets are $50 pp with the opportunity to bring your own alcohol.  Logistics regarding the invitation of prior Rotary presidents was discussed.

Ken reminded members that nominations for Rotarian of the Year need to be submitted to him by the end of this week.

There was discussion about the July 1st rib fest.  Both Howard and Lana are away and Yvonne is not able to run the event this year.  As there were no volunteers coming forward Ken questioned whether our rotary should not have a rib fest this year.  In addition the Canada Day float preparation was discussed.  Margo, Christine and Bill will co-organize this event with a $500 allocated budget.

Norm thanked everyone for their support with selling the D and D booklets.  He encouraged Rotarians to bring in money and any unsold booklets.

Colin reported that the CML Snider Fun Fair will be held on May 30th.  Five members have agreed to assist with the BBQ at this event.

Lyn spoke about the memorial service for Reg Gemmel this week.  Several Rotarians will be attending the church and grave site services.  Lyn thanked Mike Lattner for speaking on behalf of the Rotary at the service.

Howard reminded members of a meeting of the auction-dinner-dance committee after the Rotary meeting.
Chris reminded everyone that the Wellness Committee’s next presentation is this evening – Dr. Gord Holton will be speaking on preventative medicine – everyone is invited to attend at 7 pm at the Wellington Arena.

Happy bucks were circulated.  Howard’s ticket was drawn for the 50-50 lottery and he successfully picked the ace of spades! Congratulations Howard!

Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all
             concerned?

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
