Club #60346
District 7070

President's Message

On Sunday, I received a cheering email from the District that our Club is receiving a partial rebate of District levies for 2020-2021 in the amount of $900.00 which will be applied against next year’s dues. This is because some District programming was cancelled this year or was converted from in-person to online at a lower cost. As well, 2021-2022 District levies are being reduced by $5/ member.

April 24 Beach Clean-up: this week, I will be sending out an email to members and friends covering the details of the clean-up worked out by Club’s Beach Committee.

Spot the fox…I saw two on my Sunday bike ride. I believe the two are part of the Wellington fox family that have been residing in the area for several years.

A few items of interest from the District:
  • Reminder to have your members complete the Rotary 7070 survey that I sent out on March 23.  We have had close to 200 respondents so far.  We want our members to help determine District priorities.
  • Earth Day Virtual Celebration, Wednesday April 21, 7pm. Leading up to Earth Day and the Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup, Rotary D7070 will be holding a virtual “Earth Day 2021 Virtual Celebration!”.  Register here.  This is open to all Rotarians and guests everywhere to hear:
    • Importance of the Great Lakes – Mark Fisher, CEO, Council of the Great Lakes - the health and vitality of the Great Lakes to Ontario and neighbouring states and multi-jurisdictional cooperation in managing this shared resource
    • Sam Demma, PickWaste.  An entrepreneur and youth coach, Sam has a compelling and inspirational story delivered at several TED Talks.  Sam started PickWaste (in Durham Region), a community cleanup initiative that has caught widespread attention; check out Sam
  • Coaching opportunity through Rotary.  A three-part coaching certificate series open to all Rotarians is being launched and delivered on one Saturday per month for two hours -April 10, May 8 and June 12 from 10 am - 12 pm EST.  Register now by  CLICKING HERE

Last Week:
Linda Downey
(Wellington Storehouse Foodbank)

President Howard opened the meeting promptly at 7:07 a.m., with about  20 people in the room at the Legion (properly distanced seating, of course) and about 10 people on Zoom.  Our  guest speaker Linda Downey, from the Wellington Storehouse Foodbank, and an  honorary member of Wellington Rotary, joined the meeting via Zoom.

Linda provided an update on the operations of the food bank.  There are currently over 200 families being supported from Wellington, to Hillier and up to Consecon.  With the pandemic, only limited number of volunteers can work at one time to prepare the food boxes for pickup every Wednesday.  However, operations are running well.  The food bank has been well supported by the community and donors, and it is currently working in collaboration with the Prince Edward County Food Hub.   Linda mentioned that the PEC Food Hub is looking at how it may support underserved areas of PEC such as Cherry Valley and area, where transportation is required to access the Picton Food Bank.

Looking forward, Linda mentioned that the challenge for the food bank in Wellington is finding an appropriate location from which to operate in the next five years, since the current location at the Pentacostal Church on West Street may not be available by then.

The Storehouse Foodbank currently does not need any monetary donations from the Club, but may need the support in the Fall.

In other Club business, Yvonne provided and update about the Rotary Maple Syrup project. She mentioned that over half of the second batch of 500 bottles have been sold, and that anyone wanting more bottles may obtain them from Chris at their farm, or from the Wellington Home Hardware.  There was also mention that we should thank Nyman Farms and KinSip House of Fine Sprits expressly for their participation in this program.  Margo mentioned that a thank-you ad in the Wellington Times will appear on Wednesday.

Bottle Bill provided an updated on who was working at the Bottle Depot this week, and asked for volunteers to fill the open spots.

The meeting adjourned around 8:15 a.m. with the four way test.

With notes from memory by Phyo Kyi.

NOW AVAILABLE - WELLINGTON ROTARY MAPLE SYRUP

Sales of the second run of Wellington Rotary maple syrup have been going well. We are now down to 146 bottles remaining. Yvonne will be attending the in person meeting this Tuesday, so if you would like more maple syrup please let her know and she can bring it then.  With the long weekend around the corner, what a great gift and from personal experience maple syrup pairs great with chocolate.

Contact Yvonne Buys at the number below to get yours before it is SOLD OUT again.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

Was that a Beaver scrambling across our back yard lawn?

Yes, we were quite surprised to see a beaver climb up the rocks at Skiff Cove.  We are about 8 feet up from the water level. It was walking across our back yard nonchalantly, in search of a stream to dam up, I suppose!

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.

Four Way Test
Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
