President's Message

This past Sunday was the Presidents’ Walk. We had an excellent turnout considering the weather forecast, and I am very appreciative of the participation.  We had 32 Rotarians who donated funds. That is almost 75% of our members. These funds go directly to the Rotary Foundation. Kudos to all!

The month of October is dedicated to celebrate our work in community and Economic Development. Nearly 800 million people in the world live on less than $1.90 per day. By supporting our Rotary Foundation, we increase our impact by strengthening entrepreneurs and community leaders, particularly women, in impoverished communities.

World Polio Day is on October 24th. We are so close to eradication of this terrible disease. On September 20th of this year, the Canadian Minister of International Development, Ahmed Hussen, announced a new contribution of $151 million Canadian to support the work of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

October is also a very busy month for our club. The Presidents’ Walk in Wellington, the pumpkin weighing contest, the electronic recycling fundraiser, the annual Dinner Dance & Silent Auction with funds raised being donated to the new PEC hospital build, the District Conference at Nottawasaga Inn, hosted by District Governor Virginia O’Reilly (we have 7, possibly 8, members attending).

I will be circulating the Fellowship Dinners sign-up sheets in the next couple of weeks. We can plan for the end of October and November. They are always entertaining with much laughter, and they give us an opportunity to get to know our newer members, as well as spouses/partners, and thank them for their patience and support.

Last Week: Steve Rutledge (Adopt a Villagae in Laos)

Rotary Club of Wellington, October 01, 2024
Condensed Notes by Lyn McGowan

The meeting was called to order by President Roger at 7:07 am.  24 Rotarians plus Norm Dodgson on Zoom, and guest speaker Steve Rutledge from the Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise were present.

David Smith shared six Rotary "Aha" moments covering 22 years of his experience with Rotary.

‘O’ Canada’ was sung. Rev David Hawkins recited the invocation. Breakfast was served.

Steve Rutledge shared an update about "Adopt a Village in Laos".  He played a video that showed how the villagers pulled together to lay water pipes and construct washrooms in the remote villages of Laos.  He noted that last year was particularly busy, completing 3 projects and dispensing 800 water filters.  He indicated that he was still about $28,000 short for fully funding the projects planned for this year, which includes over 650 water filters.  Anyone wishing to personally donate a water filter (cost $125) should contact Steve directly.

President Roger re-circulated the signup/pledge sheet for this Sunday's Foundation walk. He is over by $20 in cash donations.  If someone has paid and their pledge is not marked "pd" please let him know.

Howard conveyed thanks for the volunteers who provided marshalling for last Sunday's county marathon.

Norm provided an update on the upcoming electronic recycling event.  In Norm and Ken's absence Trudy is pinch hitting coordinating the volunteers for the two shifts - 10- 12 and 12 - 2 on Sunday Oct 6.  Two trailer loads already are in hand, being picked up by Ted Nash and Phyo.

Pres Roger provided an update on the Foundation walk.  Gather at the Community Centre by 3pm, walk down to the beach, have some refreshments arranged by Margo and Lyn, then walk back.  Anyone who wants to e-Transfer their donation, send to wrc.billp@gmail.com, note it is for "Foundation Walk"

Cathy advised us to save the date for Christmas Party as Friday December 13 at WoTL Community Centre.
