President's Message
It’s unbelievable that we are already entering the month of December. In one sense, the constraints with how we have been living under COVID seem to make time drag, but on the other hand, the year appears to be rolling along at an ever-increasing pace. Since there will be no Board meeting and subsequent Forum meeting in December, our last Club meeting for 2020 will be on December 15th. We will resume our Tuesday gatherings on January 5th with a special guest appearance arranged by our highly esteemed member, David Hawkins.
I thank Yvonne for her great suggestion and her following up on bringing in breakfast “delectables” from a local business for a Christmas treat. This is a wonderful way of letting our community enterprises know we care about them and that they have our support; and I am sure we will be continuing this practice in the new year since we can only eat so many Sobeys muffins!
Last week, I had a nice chat with Reg and part of our discussion was about the Rotary Beach. When I became Club Secretary, I inherited Reg’s files, so I reached into his archives and came up with this opening day photo celebrating our Club’s Beach project. Can our longer-serving members identify everyone in the photo below?
In closing, and on a very happy note for me, my youngest daughter and her partner have just taken possession of a lovely country home near Napanee. Dawn and I are so excited to have them nearby; and I’ve been rummaging through my basement to collect up all my handyman tools.
President Howard opened the meeting by mentioning the two representatives from the PECMH Back the Build Campaign joining the meeting by Zoom. Nancy Parks and Shannon Coull were formally introduced by David Smith and Shannon thanked the Club for its fundraising efforts. She went on to explain that the campaign was entering a new phase branded ‘l love the County and I back the build!’ There is also a new website and a campaign ‘thermometer’ at the hospital. She explained that $14.7 million of the required $16.5 million had already been raised and there is until 2025 to find the rest. She answered questions and confirmed that construction should be started by 2022. She was thanked by David Smith.
A considerable amount of Club Forum business was completed, including updates on Alastair and Larry, the monthly financial statement from Trudy and questions about what new projects the Club might want to take on. John Inwood spoke about the selection process for Rotarian of the Year. Dave Robinet updated the Club on the Rotary ‘gaiters’ and that a President-Elect is still needed. He mentioned the new members and potential new members. Linda Douville’s enrolment is imminent.
Three new Friends of Rotary, Steve Lockyear and Denise & Warren Wendell were recognised.
Margo Langford reported on a number of topics including a new communications strategy and the purchase of four Chromebooks for students in need was approved.
Trudy Brown shared the work of the New Initiatives Committee, listing projects which included outdoor leisure & fitness equipment, benches for the Millennium Trail and beach improvement.
The availability of Rotary masks and possible plans for Christmas were shared.
David Smith reported on the Hospital Fundraising Committee’s work as well as International Projects. The Club approved $1,000 for the Karentina Hospital project in Beirut.
Up to $2,000 was approved for the Storehouse Foodbank.
Kim Lee reminded Club members of safety concerns at the Return Depot and Bottle Bill has needs for December.
Lana Whitteker said that the Christmas Angels initiative was virtually completed.
The meeting closed at 9 am with the Four Way Test.
