President's Message

I have received the following update from Rob Leek (Picton Rotary) pertaining to the Apricot Ribbon Program to recognize the work and sacrifice of our local Health Care Teams during this pandemic and throughout our lives. Our Club has participated in the campaign’s funding and distribution:
  • Have purchased more ribbons, dyed them apricot, and now have them ready for distribution.  They are starting to be seen around the community. The PIcton BIA will be approached to see if they want to take part in putting a whole bunch up in the downtown core.
    • Possibly the Wellington BIA might want to do the same? (HZ note: the ribbons are available at Wellington Home Hardware, and I have requested ribbons for distribution at the Depot).
  • Have purchased additional and slightly larger signs as well . . . the first 50 went very quickly.
  • Thank You cards have been sent to all PECMH health care workers, with an enclosed $10 Tim's gift card.  Tim Horton covered 50% of the cost.
  • Large banners are now up along the chain link fence in front of the Picton Community Centre, which is also the vaccination centre.  In addition, an even larger banner went up yesterday over Picton Main Street.   PEC waived the installation fee.
  • Spent almost $2000 on press coverage in both the Gazette and Times.  99.3 has been very generous, with free on-air promotions repeating over the next few weeks, interviews, and Public Service Announcements.
  • All written promotions include the Rotary Logo, which reads "Rotary Clubs of Picton and Wellington". Other contributing service clubs are acknowledged (Kinsmen and Kiwanis) along with Tim's, and Home Hardware Picton which is contributing $50 gift cards for randomly chosen testimonials.  The testimonial area has been disappointing to date, as despite the publicity, we have not received a single testimonial. Hopefully that will change as the publicity continues.
  • Rob is happy to respond to any specific questions from us.
I am looking forward to the reopening of our Bottle Depot this week. Shortly, I’ll be republishing the COVID rules we need to follow for the safe operation of the Depot.

I was pleased to see the strong response to the request for volunteers for our June vaccination clinics. I spoke to the County on Friday and they truly appreciate how easy we make it for them to organize the volunteer support, not to mention how wonderful our volunteers are at the clinics.

My last item is notice that our Club is postponing the June 26th Celebration until a date when we can host our guests without restrictions on numbers and venue. Plus, we’re looking to expand the theme of the event from a celebration of reaching the New Hospital fundraising goal to a wider one that celebrates Community Spirit given all the support Wellington Rotary receives with our Auctions, Bottle Depot, Diners & Duffers, Wine sales, Maple Syrup sales, etc.

District Items:

District Conference - (June 26, 9am to 12pm). If you don’t think you’ll be on Bottles, you may enjoy the Conference experience, so please register at:

Last Week:  Club Forum

This Club Forum opened with O Canada and President Howard’s introduction to the previous Board meeting’s business, mentioning Club correspendence and requests for funding. Treasurer (President Elect) Trudy gave her financial update with shared spreadsheets. The Club is heading towards a surplus in the Hospital Fund due to bottle returns and maple syrup sales. Duffers & Diners has also done well though there are still some books available (See Dave R).

John Inwood had completed his work on the proper etiquette for Zoom meetings. It is available for all on Club Runner under club docs. Dave R has also established some guidelines for Diners & Duffers interactions.

Colin up-dated the Club on the possibility of a Fall Club Golf Tournament. Framed certificates will be available for honorees at the Rotary Memorial Garden. Leaves of absence were confirmed for Reg and Richard. Guidelines for Honorary Membership are about to be finalised. Phyo was acknowledged for his efforts on the Rotary Beach clean-up and will lead the New Initiatives team to Kate’s Rest on June 9th.

President Howard is still anticipating sufficient attendance at the am sessions of the District Conference for our Club to receive the $500 in community project support.

Unfortunately, due to Covid, there will not be a Wellington Canada Parade again this year. It will also not be possible to have the event at Wellington on the Lake on June 26th.

A donation of $500 was made to Reaching for Rainbows and $2000 was approved for Healing with Horses.

President Elect Trudy outlined her new Board members: John I, Governance & Foundation; Margo, Communications +; Linda, Literacy & Education; Lyn, Secretary; Yvonne, Treasurer; PP Howard, Membership +; Ken, President Elect.

The bottle depot will now reopen on Wed June 2nd. Please volunteer with Bill. There are also opportunities for volunteering at up-coming vaccination clinics in Picton.

Kudos to Barry for his dedication to Percy the Pelican at the Rotary Beach and support for his efforts to get porta-pottis along the Millennium Trail. John H needs some help keeping the trees at the Memorial Garden watered this summer. After congratulating Donna & Ted on their anniversary and the Four Way Test, the meeting closed at 8.

Wellington Rotary Bottle Recycling Depot Will Re-Open on Wednesday June 02, 2021

YES, the Bottle Depot is OPEN starting WEDNESDAY JUNE 02!  The HPE Public Health has given us the go ahead to open, provided that we have no more than 5 volunteers working, practicing COVID safe protocols, and customers stay in their vehicles and DROP & GO.

Please bring your bottles and beer cans for recycling for deposit returns or donations.  Stay in your vehicle, and we will retrieve your bottles from the trunk of your car.   If the items are for donation, please say so in advance so that your drop-off will be faster.

Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all
            concerned?

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
