Last Week:  Debbie MacDonald Moynes (Community Care for Seniors)

Meeting opened at 7:07 by president Howard. Guests Christine Dimitris and Peter Campbell were welcomed.  Christine is a recent full-time resident in Hillier and is interested in being a Rotarian. Peter is a former Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Smith Falls and is interested in re-joining.

Guest speaker was Debbie MacDonald Moynes from the Community Care for Seniors.  Debbie provided us a briefing on the types of services provided to seniors 60+ by CCS, and the status of CCS during this pandemic.  Services include home care, telephone checkins, meals on wheels, frozen and fresh meals, information sessions and tablet rentals, active living sessions, etc..  Questions and comments were fielded from Christine and David Mckinnon after the presentation.  For comprehensive information on CCS, please visit its website by clicking HERE.

Bill Mitchell updated the club on the bottle depot volunteers this week and solicited filling vacant positions.

Linda Donville asked club members to support and sign the local petition to Council requesting repealing the parking bylaws that are restricting access to beaches around PEC, where it is not possible to get to them except by a vehicle.  The petition is  available in person at Midtown, Oak, as well as online at change.org.  Time is of the essence because Council can only repeal this if 50% of councilors favour it at council meeting in June.

Phyo provided an update on Kate’s Rest. For context, KR is a community based home for homeless persons in PEC, located on Big Island. They came to the club to present several months ago, and Conrad Guziewicz also presented to the club in May to generate support for KR.   To better understand how and if the club can help, a delegation of club members visited KR to assess the situation.  A report will be tabled to the Club Board at the end of June, for presentation and discussion at the June Club Forum.

After birthday wishes to John Wiens, the meeting adjourned with the four way test.

Phyo Kyi (filling in for Geoffrey Telling)

VFCS (View From the Cheap Seats):  Is It the TRUTH?

I've always believed in principled centred decision making, and when I learned of the Rotary Four Way Test, it first line "Is It the Truth" resonated very well for me.   Surely if you apply that litmus test, all your actions and decisions will be honourable.

Yes, there are such things as undeniable truths, such as "the sun will rise every morning".  But these days, TRUTH seems to be different for different peoples.  For examples:  "Is Sir John A. MacDonald a Canadian nation building figure, or is he a vicious person who sent Indigenous children to their demise?", "Is the COVID vaccine safe or experimental?"

I was discussing this very topic with my daughter during our father's day breakfast on Sunday morning at the beach, and she said something that was very astute: "It's because people have different realities."   I thought, "how can you have different realities? reality implies it is absolute, REAL, there is only one reality."   But alas, No.

You see, "Perception IS Reality", and in these times of digital media and viral spread of information at breakneck speed, different perceptions can be created for different audiences, and people subscribe to these perceptions in an echo chamber where their prescribed perception is reinforced with every byte of information consumed.  So, if Perception is Reality, and Reality is Truth, then Truth depends on what you Perceive, and what you Perceive depends on what you Experience, Learn, and Understand.  We must all come together and try to have common experiences, learn about our commonalities rather than our differences, and try to understand what we are trying to communicate to each other.

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
