President's Message

Almost 4 weeks later, the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues …news coverage of the devastation is hard to watch.  The plight of the Ukrainian people and the destruction of their homeland has captured the hearts of us all.   There has been an outpouring of support from Canadians, many who have connections to Ukraine, or have friends/neighbors with Ukrainian heritage.  In The County, it was great to read about the Picton Rotary’s initiative, as well as the Lions plea for local support.  The response from within our Club has also been overwhelming … $4270 will be sent to support Rotary International efforts within Ukraine.  And, this is in addition to many individual donations that our members have made thru other avenues.

What the future holds for Ukraine is unknown.  We hope and pray that something can be done to stop this unnecessary ruthless attack.   To quote Irish Statesman Edmund Burke, The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”  - and WE are doing what we can to help Ukraine.

Last Week:  Jacques Michaud
(Trans-Atlantic Sailing Adventure)

MPres Trudy opened the meeting with the usual protocols, welcoming 24 members and two guests (Janet Michaud & AG Brenda Hellyer) in person and a further 6 by Zoom. Pres Elect Ken was thanked for organizing the breakfasts which were sold out.

Chris introduced member and speaker Jacques Michaud and his wife, Janet, who had met at Queen’s and followed their passion for sailing throughout their life together. We were all aware that they had been invited to help sail a yacht across the Atlantic last year.

Jacques began his presentation which was accompanied by photos by showing the route from the Canary Islands to Antigua that they followed on an Oyster 625 manufactured by YOLO (You Only Live Once) with the owner, his wife and two other crew members. He explained how many sailors chose to cross the Atlantic westward at that time of year because of prevailing winds and the absence of hurricanes. Jacques and Janet joined the boat in Santa Cruz, Tenerife, and left port after provisioning on November 12th last. After a slow and uneventful beginning to the voyage, a decision to motor sail brought the discovery that earlier problems with the engine had not been solved and this forced a change of plan with a stop in the Cape Verde Islands to effect repairs. This took seven days of sailing and further delays before they could set off again. With stronger winds, the boat reached Antigua after a further thirteen days. The entire experience had lasted from November 12th to December 17th.

Jacques’s presentation was very informative and interesting. He answered several questions and included some fascinating anecdotes as well as stunning photos.

Under Club business, Bottle Billy’s two shift slots for Wed & Sat were filled by Brenda & Christine. April’s schedule is available on-line now. Barry’s role in achieving the revamped hospital thermometer was recognised and MPres Trudy shared that our Club members contributions to aid Ukraine would exceed $3000 and be matched up to a maximum of $25,000. There was also an up-date on the beach accessabilty project from Phyo. Michelle had brought 5 D & D books for each member to sell but not before Saturday. Yvonne reported that the maple syrup was being processed and would be bottled and available for sale soon.

After congratulating Dick on his birthday, thanking Jacques for his presentation, the 50/50 draw and the 4 Way Test, the meting closed at 8.24.

Diners & Duffers Books - Urgent

Following is an update on the Diners & Duffers books...

Michelle & Norm are collecting all of the incorrect booklets (page 27 has Red Lion Pub at the top of page), and will take them to Market High the printer after the Tuesday meeting.  If you have some of the misprinted books, but won't be at the meeting, perhaps you can give your booklets to a fellow Rotarian that will be attending the meeting.   Optionally you can drop them off at Norm's house at 47 Heritage Drive in Wellington on the Lake ... or call Norm  at 613-399-5790 and he will pick them up from you.

Again, thanks from Michelle & Norm for the extra effort to ensure we get the incorrect booklets out of circulation.

Rotary Maple Syrup will be Available Soon

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
