President's Message

A hearty congratulations to the team that organized and ran our first, and highly successful Online Auction. As expected, there was a flurry of bidding over the last few days that pushed us towards meeting our goal. Once again, the wonderful collaboration amongst the auction team, the item contributors and our sponsors has proven that we have a winning formula within our community! I look forward to the Auction update from the committee at this Tuesday’s meeting.

We have broken the Club’s membership sound barrier by reaching 40 members!  Plus, we have another application to review at the October Board meeting. Thank you to our sponsors who are meeting with future candidates and encouraging them to join our Club.

Pumpkinfest 2020 was not open to the public but it was quite a lively affair, especially with the 4H gang taking a more active role in this year’s event. There were fewer pumpkins to be weighed, but the Wellington Rotary’s teams of pumpkin wranglers once again demonstrated their world-renowned professionalism and grit. Congratulations to the team of Mike, Colin and Dave R who earned bragging rights by lifting this year’s winning pumpkin weighing in at 1696.6 lbs.

In next week’s bulletin, I will have an update on Sunday’s Foundation Walk. Currently, we have $525 in pledges and the final amount raised may be higher.  Thank you all!  As well, thank you to Lana and Margo for making all the arrangements.

President Howard

Last Week:
Shannon Coul
(PECMHF)

President Howard opened the meeting with members present and via Zoom. Linda Donville (sic?) was introduced as a guest and potential member.

Three new members were inducted by President Howard: Bill Pennell, sponsored by Dave R; Yvonne Buys and Chris Compeau sponsored by Lyn. Bill Hurst will be initiated in the near future.

Barry gave an up-date and points for consideration re the on-line auction and took questions. Only $4000 short of target with two days to go!

Guest speaker via Zoom, Shannon Coull, CAO of the Back the Build campaign for the new hospital was introduced. She began by thanking Club member David McKinnon and all at Quinte Health for their support and continued to explain that endoscopy would continue to be the speciality in Picton. She also shared the good news that the Province was supporting the project to the tune of up to $100,000,000. A new fundraising launch is coming soon and the needed $5,700,000 should be assured.

Shannon shared the floor plans of the new hospital, explaining the different areas and the location of the Wellington Rotary-sponsored waiting room. She took questions from several members and was thanked by Colin. David McKinnon then informed the Club that a new, highly-qualified, CEO of the Health Board was taking up the appointment forthwith.

Bill Mitchell reported on the Depot and President Howard mentioned the Foundation Walk and the pumpkin weigh-in.

Jacques Michaud & Dave Robinet will assist Michelle with Duffers & Diners, for next year. Members volunteered to buy a toy gift for a child as part of the Christmas Angel Fund.  And Lyn thanked the members for voluneteering to pick grapes at Hollyhill vineyards for Lacey Estates and Domaine Darius.

President Howard closed the meeting with the 4 way test.

David Gillingham's limited edition Rotary Cuvee 2018.

The idea of a Rotary wine to raise fund for the new hospital building fund was hatched by Past President Brian McGown and winemaker David Gillingham.

The result is David's unique and exquisite blend of Marquette & Petite Pearl.  The Marquette was sourced from Brian & Lyn McGowan's Hollyhill vineyards.  Rotarians hand-picked the Petite Pearl grapes from a vineyard in Waupoos.  100% of sales go to PEC Hospital Foundation.

Rotary Song Lyrics:

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.

Four Way Test
Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
