President's Message
Our club is known for getting things done and for our involvement in the community. It was brought to our attention of the deteriorating state of some of the boards along the boardwalk at Rotary Beach. Since the County was stalling on making some repairs, we took it upon ourselves and just went down and did it. John Inwood was instrumental in arranging the crew and picking up the materials we needed. In fact upon his first trip to Home Building Supplies, he spoke to the owner Mark Busscher and asked if they would consider donating some of the materials. They certainly did and we are greatly thankful for that. Our work crew showed up and in total we replaced 7 boards that had deteriorated along the boardwalk.
At this point, there are still some screws that are sticking up. Attempts were made to screw these risen screws into the boards, but due to rusting and seizing most of them couldn’t be taken care of. This will likely be a bigger job down the road when a total upgrade is done to the board walk. Our work crew was: Tim Cox, Parker Gallant, Kim Lee, John Inwood, Colin Fredericks, Ted Nash, Pierre LeBrun and myself. The fact that local establishments such as Home Building Supplies, was willing to help by making a donation shows how Rotary not only connects the Community, but the World.
Now, lets mark our calendars for some upcoming events.
Tuesday the 19th of November for our Annual Pot Luck dinner. Parker Gallant and his wife Suzanne we will hosting the dinner this year. Further details will be coming, but it will be a Pot Luck and BYOB. We will still have our morning meeting that day.
Tuesday the 17th of December for our Annual Christmas dinner. It will be held at the Legion Hall and dinner will be prepared by Heather. Costs and details to follow.
On a side note: I recently had my laptop in for service. Since then I haven’t been able to log into Club Runner. Until I get things sorted out, I will have to rely on others to send emails out.

Alternatives for Women and the Children’s Foundation
Leah Morgan, Alternatives for Women, provides counselling services for victims of domestic violence. Currently, they have 6 units where women can live for up to a year to flee domestic violence. The organization is building to new facility, called Vi’s House, where women can live as long as they want to re-establish their lives. Leah said that they do not receive government funding for this project, so they must rely on fundraising, and so far they have raised about $50,000. Vi’s House will also provide an emergency bed and crisis line that offers free support 24 hours a day. Vi’s House is scheduled to open in December or January. Currently, 3 full-time staff, and 2 part-time staff operate this program. Leah reminded us that in Canada, on average, a woman is killed by her partner every four days. Any funding that we could provide would be greatly appreciated and would help cover operating expenses.
Kate Anderson, reminded us that the Children’s Foundation is the not for profit fundraising organization associated with Children’s Aid, providing support for extra curricular activities for children requiring their service. In addition, they provide prenatal care for expectant mothers, counselling, and host of other services. We may have heard of the Children’s Foundation, which hosts a Boat Cruise fundraiser each year. Kate asked Wellington Rotary to partner with the Children’s Foundation to host Breakfast with the Dukes on Saturday, November 23rd at the Lehigh Arena. This fundraiser will feature breakfast served by the Dukes, photo opportunities, and raffles. Set up will take place on Friday afternoon and Lana Whitteker will co-ordinate Wellington Rotary’s involvement on this fundraiser.
Barry Davidson addressed planting of memorial trees on the Millennium Trail. An ad hoc committee directed PEC staff to expedite the process of tree planting. Barry suggested that tree planting in Wellington could happen very soon.
Michelle Kosoy is co-ordinating the club’s participation in the Diner’s and Duffer’s value coupon book project this year. She reported that they are looking for a ¼ page advertisement sponsor at the rate of $400. If you would like to help, or if you know of a potential sponsor, talk to Michelle.
John Inwood announced that a team of Wellington Rotarians were working to replace damaged wood on the beach boardwalk starting at 9:00 on Tuesday, October 15, 2019.
President Dave met with Lisa Lindsay about a Halloween skating and haunted house party to be held from 5:00 – 6:00 PM at the Lehigh Arena. Dave will get back to the club with more details about how you can help.
Guests: Kate Anderson, Lynn McGowan, Fay Moxon, Leah Morgan
