Club Bulletin for week of February 21, 2023
This Week:  Mr Terry Green
(Dog Training)

                  President's Message
Another mild week in the County, the sap is flowing in maple trees which means our Rotary Maple Syrup Team lead by Yvonne Buys will be kicking off our MAPLE SYRUP fundraiser soon. Start getting your orders in, price has been set at $20 per bottle again this year.
The first official County Family Day is expected to see a large turnout with upwards of 200 people expected to participate. With over a dozen donations of soup/chilli our Rotary Soup Luncheon will help make this day big success.
Our Club is currently in some discussion on an initiative to support the disaster relief effort in Turkey/Syria. The Rotary Club of Toronto is offering matching grants for donations, for example if we donate $1200 for a Shelter Box they will make a matching donation.  It is hoped thousands of Rotary Clubs across the world initiative some financial support for the victims of the earthquake.
I have attached an invitation for Rotarians to attend an online World Understanding and Peace Day Symposium on February 23rd.   Special presentations will be made including one from a Nobel Peace Prize winner from Tunis.  Rotary programs like Mediators without Borders and our Peace and Economic Centers support peace across the world.
Ken Robertson

Last Week:  Lori Gallant

(Msamaria Children's Home, Moshi, Tanzania)

Notes by Barry Davidson

All members today were present in person to hear Lori Gallant speak. Her friend, Heather, was a guest.
Lori talked about her life of exploration climbing Machu Picchu and hiking the Camino Trail twice and other life developing experiences. Today’s talk was on “My Journey to Msamaria” in Tanzania at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. She met the Maasai peoples and together they used the material she brought to make dresses for her and others.
She visited an orphanage of 75 children in the town of Moishe and bonded with many of the children there. Lori setup a Facebook page which helped them increase their sales of hand-made bracelets. Scheduled to return there soon, and Lori is bringing 150 lbs of fabric and hair grooming supplies, for she is a hairdresser. She is captivated by the orphanage situation and wants to help them.
Their water supply needs improving and for this, Ken mentioned to Lori that our Club could consider providing assistance if coupled with the Rotary Club of Moishe. Shawn could be our contact on this endeavour. Members expressed their admiration for the dedicated work that she is doing.
Other Club Business
Trudy reported that our Spelling Bee team came in third in the competition in Trenton, stumbling on “maraschino”, but succeeding on many difficult words. She said that two Bee costumes are available for the children’s competition in April for any Rotary volunteers to wear.
Margo announced a gathering being planned at WOTL on March 3 to show the Syrian families here that people care. She will email details to members and draft a proposal to the Board for what she thinks the Club could do for financial support of the rescue effort. The Rotary Club of Toronto has pledged to match donations from 7070 Clubs.
Yvonne said the maple sap is running so the 700 bottles of syrup for sale by our Club will be ready soon. The price is under retail, so everyone was encouraged to get out and sell, sell!
Lynn’s number was drawn again for the 50:50 but she did not draw the Ace of spades.

Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
