This Week:  Club Forum

                  President's Message

After a brief warm spell with green grass showing through we are now back in the heart of winter.  Almost a foot of snow fell this past week with more on the horizon.    While I don't have a snow blower I am starting a savings account to get one next year.   On that note a reminder for those that are working in the Bottle Depot.   It can get extremely cold and it is important to dress warm.    The Bottle Depot committee has indicated there will be some heat paks available to help and this week an electric heater was available as well.

The Family Day planning is underway, our Club under the leadership of Liz will be offering a reading program for toddlers (and some free books).   Christine is looking for volunteers to help her with some games and crafts for the young ones.   I am coordinating the Soup/Chili and Buns for approximately 150 people at lunch time so we will be looking for volunteers to help out there as well.

I have attached a notice from the District about the upcoming opportunity for a local candidate to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Symposium (RYLS) formerly known as RYLA.  This is a wonderful opportunity for a local young person ages 17-23.    If you have a candidate please advise so we can get their name in by January 31.     You will recall last year Liz had a young man from Belleville who attended and returned to the Club and gave a wonderful talk on how his experience made a difference in his life.

The 2023 Rotary Youth Leadership Symposium (RYLS) is taking place, May 11-14, 2023 at the Ganaraska Forest Centre!  The 3-night experience is geared toward youth between the ages of 17-23 and will offer an inspiring program including: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Reconciliation and Land Based Education, Hands-on Activities, Group Dynamics, Public Speaking, Outdoor Survival and GPS Geocache adventures along with campfires, friendship and tons of fun and learning!!!  All this for only $375 per participant which covers all programs, accommodation, and meals.  Rotary Clubs are encouraged to find and sponsor eligible participants within their community, as well as members of the Rotaract and Interact Clubs that they host.  There are only 30 spots available!  Online applications and further details will be available on the Rotary District 7070 website and all District social media channels by January 31, 2023.  Stay tuned!!

Last Week:  Free-Form Club Discussion
(in lieu of speaker absence)

The meeting was attended by 25+ number of members, as the meeting opened with the usual Rotary song and O Canada.   The scheduled speaker was unable to attend due to health issues in the family.  President Ken improvised by going to each of the Rotary banners on the wall from different Rotary Clubs, and asked for comments from members who had visited these clubs about their respective experiences.  The meeting was jovial and informal in nature as we enjoyed our usual bagel and creme cheese plus muffins from Tim Hortons.

For club business, President Ken discussed the planning for family day, which is underway with Ken organizing the free soup program, and Liz and Christine organizing the children's reading and crafts program.

After the round of happy bucks and 50/50 draw, the meeting adjoured with the four way test.

Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all
             concerned?

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
