President Lyn opened the meeting by continuing the description of our founder, Paul Harris’, early history after graduating as a lawyer in 1891 and trying many different occupations as he decided what his life work would be.
31 members in person and two on Zoom listened to Art Knight, VP of Prince Edward Fitness and Aquatic Centre (pefac), give us his annual update on the Membership Assistance Program and an outline of their exercise programs. Matt Smith, pefac Treasurer, was also present to answer any financial questions.
Pefac is a non-profit organization to promote health in their pool and fitness centre. It provides accessible facilities regardless of physical, economic or social status. Art complimented our Rotary club for its support of the Membership Assistance Program and encouraged us to continue to support it.
The Assistance Program provides annual assistance from $5/month to $55/month for those who cannot afford the total cost. No one is turned away. Currently there are 6 adults and 7 families on assistance. Annually, people have to apply each year to this program with supporting documents to evaluate their current status. Only one staff person evaluates the information that is kept confidential. As the effect of COVID tappers off, demand for all their programs is increasing.
Art made special mention of our support for the eleven Kids in Aquatic day program last summer.
Current pefac membership is 858 families, including 1139 members. Doctors recommend exercise as a lifestyle change to address health issues so pefac is filling a community need.
Art listed some of the exercise rooms and facilities:
- Cardio weight room - new equipment added
- 2 squash courts - also used for kids’ programs including a social club
- 6 lane swimming pool, the only one in the County
- Yoga room
- Cycle room
- Marshall arts area
In closing Art thanked Rotary again for its financial support and hoped that we would continue it.
