MPres Trudy opened the meeting at 7:07 by welcoming Christine Dimitris as a de facto member who, like Peter Campbell, has now completed all the stages of joining the Club except for their investiture. Twenty-four members were present in person and a further eight joined by Zoom including Suzanne Latchford of Healing with Horses, the guest presenter.
Tim Cox introduced Suzanne who has had a lifelong interest in horses and came to be passionate about their role in providing a therapeutic service, as an adult. She explained that Healing with Horses has been able to provide therapy for families with children acutely experiencing the stresses of Covid as well as those with more specific diagnoses of conditions. They typically provides 25 sessions of therapy per week which are tailored to the individual needs of the client. Each session is an hour or half hour and charges are reduced to make them as accessible as possible. The centre’s work is supported by a grant from the Huff Estates Family Fund with additional help from the County and other organisations, like Rotary. In answering members’ questions, the need for more Board members for Healing with Horses was highlighted, especially anyone with grant-writing or fund-raising skills. Towards the end of her talk, Suzanne gave a moving example of how Healing with Horses can help someone who has very limited physical movement but is absolutely joyful being on the horse in different ways and interacting with it. She was thanked by Charles Lacey.
Under Club business, the bottle depot volunteer needs for this week were shared by Bill Mitchell, as was the situation with volunteering at the Picton vaccination centre by Ken Robertson.
Colin Fredericks gave a brief update on the Golf Tournament.
MPres Trudy said that the Club’s first instalment towards its pledge to “Back the Build” had been recognised by the PECMH Foundation in their newsletter.
With regard to Kate’s Rest, Phyo reported that the bathroom would be completed in a week’s time thanks to the work of the plumber (charged less than $160) and John Wiens who will finish the tiling (pro bono). There may be additional expenses for supplies, but it will come in at less than the budgeted amount. Liz Bosma and Linda Donville will meet with Ryan on Monday August 9 to lay out plans for future education and support. The requested generic Letter of Support will not be provided. Instead, individual letters will be supplied linked to specific grant applications.
MPres Trudy informed the Club that next week’s meeting will include Campbellford’s participation, at least for that portion led by District Governor Ron Dick who has also shared information on a Youth to Youth Engagement Program. This is aimed at students in Grades 9 to 11 and would accommodate 25 aboriginal and 25 non-aboriginal young people. Club members are encouraged to consider possible beneficiaries of this opportunity.
The Club supported the continuation in the Duffers & Diners Fundraiser for its 20th year.
Some more help is requested for Margo providing refreshments at our meetings. Heather is unable to come back to cook for us yet, but Bill Mitchell’s grandson, who has worked with Michael Hoy, may be able to fill in.
Past President Howard was awarded his (second) President’s gavel plaque and thanked for his year of service.
After recognising Dave Robinet’s birthday and David & Shirley Smith’s anniversary, and the 4 Way Test, the meeting closed at 8.20
