More kudos to David Smith regarding the success of his Wellington Times Op-ed encouraging seniors to donate their windfall OAS top-up to the new Hospital build. Not only has it resulted in over $5000 in donations, but it found the support of Rick Conroy, whose Hospital build boosting article “Measure” in last week’s Wellington Times may generate additional contributions to our Club’s Hospital fund.

This past week, we received lots of positive press in the Wellington Times. There’s no question, we need to encourage publicity throughout the year to keep us in the public’s eye since it makes it easier for us to raise funds when the community knows how we’re using their dollars. The success of our white wine sales produced and sold by Lacey Estates has set the stage for our Domain Darius red wine initiative. Therefore, to keep up our momentum and public awareness, another key priority for this year, is setting out our next community project(s). Our community appreciates knowing that Wellington Rotary is continuing to enhance and increase the enjoyment of their town’s facilities and environs.

On another track, I encourage you to get your questions in to Dave for Marcia’s guest speak. My thinking is that this is a great opportunity to better understand the priorities of our County’s administration. Thank you Dave for making these arrangements.

In closing, our ZOOM session with District Governor Mark Chipman is set for Wednesday Aug 26 th at 07:00 am. Quinte Sunrise will be participating along with us. Please note, there will not be a regular Tuesday meeting on August 25 th.

President Howard Ziedenberg

Last Week:

Councillor Mike Harper
(Wellington Beach & Other Topics)

Meeting opened at 7:07 a.m. with 14 members present, 1 guest (Asst DG Brenda Hellyer), 1 presenter (Mike Harper, Wellington Councillor), 13 joined by Zoom.

After a check on member health by President Howard, Lyn McGowan introduced Mike Harper who outlined his two main topics: Maintenance of existing facilities in and around the ‘beach’ area and visitor issues exacerbated by the pandemic.

Counscillor Mike admitted that the County had not lived up to requirements for the area in the past but felt that a “corner had been turned” with two key hirings at Shire Hall and greater resident engagement. Changes that had been happening in Wellington for some time were highlighted by behavioural shifts caused by the pandemic restrictions leading to chaotic situations at times in this area. Higher water levels have also made the problems worse. There is need for new thinking and a design for the entire beach and boatlaunch area is to be sought. The location of both boatlaunches is problematic and further uncertainty has arisen since privately-owned property on both sides of the harbour is currently for sale.

Mike fielded questions from several members on related topics including collection of fees, contact with the Club Secretary Lyn from the general public, cost of redevelopment of Belleville Road boat launch, and cost of water/sewer upgrades. He was thanked by Tim.

President Howarad recognized Asst DG Brenda Hellyer who shared her thoughts. Bottle Bill up-dated depot needs and received several positive responses. Duffers & Diners books still need to be sold and money given to Ted (plus any not going to be sold by holder). President Howard made a request for a volunteer to organize next week’s refreshments. DG’s virtual visit discussed by President Howard. Barry gave an up-date on the Memorial Garden Project. Helpers sought for Wed.

David & Shirley’s anniversary, Dave R’s birthday and Barry’s Civic Award congratulated, President Howard reminded the Club of the need for a new project and closed the meeting at 8.45 a.m.

Rotary Song Lyrics:

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.

Four Way Test
Of the things we think, say, and do:
1.  Is it the TRUTH?
2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
     FRIENDSHIPS?
4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
