Rotary Club of Wellington, October 08, 2024
Condensed Notes by Lyn McGowan
Pres. Roger called the meeting to order at 7:07 a.m. 32 Rotarians present, 1 on Zoom. 1 Guest, Mike Harper, filling in for JJ Johnson from County FM 93.1
Dawn Cutler provided her Rotary moment. She's a Charter member, recruited by Ted Nash. She's been President of the club twice. She agreed to take the role a second time because "I know if I ever needed anything, I would just have to put the word out and the Rotarians will be there for me."
Health or Rotarians and family members: Norm and wife Marilyn are home now (from Calgary) Marilyn has been diagnosed with a lung condition that requires oxygen - incurable by manageable.
Mike Harper, standing in for JJ Johnson, who is helping out with the evacuation efforts in Florida. Mike has been in the County for 20 years, career in market research, advertising and strategic planning. councillor for Wellington 2018-2022. Volunteer for radio station from the begining, currently vice-chair of the Board.
County FM did an online survey of its listener base in August 2024. 302 responses. Topic was "where are we now?" "brand health" "how are we perceived?". Key findings:
- Who is listening? - 56 - 75 year olds. Almost equal male/female. Listening through the week. In the car and at home. Average 11 hrs/wk.
- How are we perceived? - Attitudes very positive. Local approach is key strength (local news + current events, music by local musicians) Current content is the right amount.
- What should we do more of? - more local news
- Agree/Disagree - 90% agree County FM is important source of local news. 90% agree it is essential service. 80% agree it is positive force in life. 90% provided supportive comments about shopping locally.
- What do we need to fix? - 1/3 said music selection too obscure. Less than 50% said should play more local music. Most said amount of time spent on fundraising is OK. Increase listenership in the 45 - 55 demographic.
- Why don't some people listen to County FM? - They don't listen to traditional radio.
- 40% of respondents have never donated to the radio station.
- This week is the 10th anniversary. Celebration at the the Regent on Friday 7pm. Pay what you can. Tax receipt for contributions of $50 or more. Need to register at the Regent theatre website.
Mike was thanked by Trudy.

Norm - letter received for heartfelt thank-you re: donation to single father for hockey equipment for his three sons.
Howard - Thank-you note received from Tina Gemmell for memorial dedication photos on website, link sent to families.

Margo - voluntold to lead the Pumpkinfest float. Participants and helpers welcomed October 19 @9:00 am. Lyn and Bill Pennell raised their hands.
Phyo - provided update on the HUB child care centre's quest for location for expansion. We've connected them to the Pinecrest development org who are owners of the old Pinecrest school as a possible location. Depending on the progress of their discussion, there may be a way the Club can help with fundraising effort.
Trudy - About 90 people are signed up for tickets for Dinner Dance. Members needing tickets should purchase soonest.
Pres. Roger - President's walk yielded $1350. 15 people walked from community centre to beach and back. Many thanks.
Trudy - New sign now at Bottle Depot detailing our donation recipients and projects and events and any info regarding the Club's activities. Many thanks to Shawn Ellis for getting the sign made, and Friend of Rotary Rick Bobzner for providing the T-Square ruler to keep the writings on the sign straight!
Birthday: Happy BD Lyn Mcgowan!
Anniversary: Robynne Smith & John Heeringa (8 years)
Happy bucks:
- Ted Nash rescued a run-away electronic recycling trailer that Phyo and Trudy had the mishap. Phyo proposed, with "new Ted" having relegated the original Ted to now be "old Ted", that we instead now call old Ted "Great Ted".
- Margo reported that Abdul (who did some work for us last year) is currently stuck in Lebenon war with his new partner.
- Christine suggested "Old Ted" be now called "Old Great Ted"
- Dawn volunteered a "fine" for forgetting her bottle depot shift. Many thanks to Friend of Rotary Lari Langford for staying back for a second shift to help out til Dawn got there. Great FoR's
Dawn's number was drawn (again!) for 50/50 but she did not get the Ace of Spades. Got her consolation price of $10.
Meeting adjourned withe the four way test.
50/50 Draw This Week: $581
Make sure you get your ticket this week!
