President's Message

I thought last Tuesday’s meeting was a great experience. We had the pleasure of hosting Past RI President Wilf
Wilkinson, an incredible guest and speaker, whose Rotarian accomplishments are tremendous and inspiring.
Another cool part of last week’s meeting was that we shared the session with the Campbellford Club. Their Club
president, Rob Pope, has asked if our Club and the Bowmanville Club (also early risers) would like to jointly host one meeting per month starting in February to hear former District Governor Mary Lou Harrison. Mary Lou Harrison is another fantastic Rotarian who is achieving wonderful things through Rotary. I would appreciate your
comments/feedback on these joint Club meetings so I’m adding it to this Tuesday’s Forum agenda.

This week I received my February edition of the Rotary magazine. I feel the timing of this edition was well positioned after just hearing from Past RI President Wilf Wilkinson. Wilf’s speech covered the huge effort and successes Rotary has made towards eradicating polio, but he also covered the many aspects of what Rotary does in trying to improve the lives of people in our Global community. In synch with Wilf’s message, the cover of February’s Rotary celebrates Rotary’s success in eradicating wild polio from Africa, and then when you turn to page five, there’s an ad for the Rotary Foundation that more widely highlights the numerous initiatives that engage our Rotarian energies.

For our Club, we live “Service above Self” especially at the County’s community level. Although we donate towards global projects (polio eradication, RI Foundation, emergency disaster relief, water and sanitation, etc.) the largest part of our funds and effort goes towards supporting our local community. The degree to which we divide our funds between global and local initiatives comes up regularly in our discussions, and each year it’s part of the financial review when setting the Club’s budget. Therefore, as a member, you have input on where we should focus our efforts and, as a Club, we decide together and pull together towards achieving our goals.

Last Week:
Wilf Wilkinson
(Joint Zoom Session
with Campbellford Club)

President Howard called the joint Zoom meeting with the Campbellford Club to order at 7.07 with 42 members present. Our guest speaker, Past International President Wilf Wilkinson, joined the meeting soon after. It was attended by all three area Assistant Governors, Brenda Hillyer, Kim Hulsman & Roger Tessier.

President Howard reported that Larry Elsbury was in a palliative state. (He subsequently passed away and condolences were sent to the family)

Past International President Wilkinson was introduced by Ian Lancaster who summarized the incredible list of accomplishments that Wilf has achieved, including, but by no means limited to, membership of Rotary since 1962, the R.I. Presidency 2007-8, Foundation Trustee and Member of the Order of Canada.

Wilf gave us an amazingly inspirational speech (circulated to members by Pres Howard since) on the theme of “What is Rotary?” and using the letters of ROTARY to structure his presentation. Members and Friends of Rotary are strongly encouraged to read Wilf’s speech for themselves as this platform cannot do it justice.

Wilf was thanked by Dave Sharpton of the Campbellford Club.

After brief club business, including reference to the Trenton fire extinguisher fund-raiser, the meeting ended at 7:52 with the Four Way Test.

Picture(s) of the Week

As a way of breaking up the monotony of the pandemic lockdown, we asked our readers to submit pictures of interesting subjects (people, places,  animals, things, etc.) they've encountered, whether it is in the County or in past travels around the world.  Thanks to Yvonne, Dave R., Tim, and Sheila (friend of Margo's) who contributed fabulous pics of owls in their local natural habitat.  All the pics were great, so a round of big applause for the photographers.  This week, the theme is Sandbanks Provincial Park:

Sunrise Over Dunes Beach

This picture was taken from Skiff Cove, looking across Wellington bay over to Sandbanks Provincial Park Dunes Beach at 7:00 a.m.

Walking Path at Sandbanks Campgrounds

This picture was taken during one of our long walks in the Sandbanks Provincial Park campgrounds.

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.

Four Way Test
Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
