President's  Message

We recite the four-way test every week at our meetings, and believe it or not, for most Rotarians, we are subconsciously ingraining it into our daily behavior.

For example, the other day, a gentleman came to the Bottle Depot with his bottles and a fairly good sized bag of cans. We counted his bottles and asked him if he had a count on the cans. His response was, “about 300, but you can pay me for 250.”  I looked at the bag, and asked myself, “Is it the TRUTH?”.  Based on seeing other bags, there is no way that the bag had 300 cans, unless some of them have been crushed. I decided that I was going to count the number of cans in the bag.  There were 144 cans in total, a far cry from 300, or 250 that he said to pay him for.

So, the question is, do we take everyone’s word for it? Most people are honest and wouldn’t try to mislead us on purpose, and we don’t really have time to be counting out large quantities of cans on most days. “Is it FAIR to all concerned?” I asked myself.  This situation certainly was not.

if I confronted the gentleman with the correct count, “Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIENDSHIPS?” Surely, if he is from the community, we deal with him on a regular basis, and he should be treated with respect. Yes, we have to correct the count, but we have to deal with the situation so that it would be BENEFICIAL to all concerned.  In this case, this gentleman said that he was guessing that there were 300 cans in the bag, and maybe it was an honest mistake.  We paid him for 144 cans, plus his bottles, and cordially thanked him for supporting our fundraising effort for the community hospital.

We are Rotarians, and we say, think, and do differently than some people. We need to sprinkle this magic dust through our daily interactions... Rotary Connects the World.

Last Week: Club Forum
(YearEnd Financials and 2019-2020 Budget)

The club Treasurer Trudy Brown gave 2 reports to the members. The first was the monthly financials for June 2019. Since the Rotary year ends in June, the treasurer then gave a comprehensive year end report for 2018-2019. Members complemented the treasurer on the thoroughness of the financial reports.

Club president Dave Robinet then presented the proposed budget for 2019-2020 which had been reviewed by the club Board of Directors at a special meeting the previous evening. Club members then voted to approve the budget as presented.
Here is the link to the  Financial Report & Budget on our website.

Lisa Lindsay was allowed to address the Club Forum on the proposal by the Dukes to repurpose the Rotary Room in the Community Centre. The staff report on the matter had been provided to the Council’s Committee of the Whole meeting the previous week. The staff report recommended that Council not approve the conversion of the multi purpose room to a dedicated fitness and weight training room. Committee of the Whole agreed with the staff report and recommendation, and it will now go forward to the entire Council for final decision.
