President's Message

Under Ontario’s move to COVID Reopening Stage 3, we are required to limit indoor gatherings to a maximum of 50 people, or less, to maintain physical distancing. This is great news for us, and efforts are underway to re-establish a regular venue for resuming our in-person meetings. I have had several discussions with Buck about getting back into the Legion, and I have another call set with him for this Wednesday. Also, Barry has contacted Lisa Lindsay about the use of the Highline Hall – thank you Barry.

This week, we’re going to try something as an interim meeting step; Parker and Susanne have graciously offered the use of their backyard for our Forum meeting! I will send a separate email with the details of the meeting.

Reg Gemmell contacted some of us to let us know he is heading to Kingston on Monday for a pacemaker, so I know we’ll all be wishing Reg a healthy and speedy recovery. For the newer members, Reg was our Club Secretary for many years and although he’s been unable to attend meetings for the past few years, Reg has been very active behind the scenes including providing tremendous support to the newer Secretaries. Recently Reg has been working diligently on the clean-up of member records in ClubRunner.

My thanks to those members that have come forward to fill in some key gaps in the Club Roles and Primes document:

In closing, due to these crazy times, Dawn and I have cancelled our annual pilgrimage to the family cottage in Quebec. This year we would have needed to isolate ourselves and not had a chance to visit with any of the cousins and family; thus, we felt it was best to stay home and enjoy next year’s visit that much more. I have dutifully notified Bottles Bill that I am now available for additional shifts.

Last Week:

Steve Rutledge (Laos Water Project)

Pres Howard welcomed participants incl Steve Rutledge our guest speaker.

PH (Pres Howard) reminded the Club that we (most of Ontario) start Stage 3 of Covid precautions and this could allow actual meetings. He has been & is in contact with the Legion and other poss venues. More later.

David MacKinnon introduced our speaker who returned to up-date the Club with all the information re his projects in Laos to help remote villagers. After a very thorough and inspirational presentation, including an explanation of the challenging conditions from drought to Hoof & Mouth to Covid 19. Steve (from Whitby Sunrise Club) answered members’ questions and is looking for our support.

Bottle Bill reported that 3 more volunteers were needed for tomorrow. (Since filled)

Barry reported on the progress of the Rotary Memorial Garden project which is well underway and requires deep post-hole digging promised at a 50% discount for the Club.

The subject of the Bottle Returns Service was discussed with suggestions as to how to speed up the process for donors. Some further consultations and decisions have to be taken before implementation of changes.

Members contributed their thoughts through Happy Dollar sharings and PH closed the meeting with the Four(five) Way Test

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.

Four Way Test
Of the things we think, say, and do:
1.  Is it the TRUTH?
2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
     FRIENDSHIPS?
4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
