President's Message

Welcome to summer – it has finally arrived!

Our last month of the 2024/25 Rotary year is upon us. I encourage all of you to reflect on the positives; the good things that you, as individuals, have assisted in accomplishing during this Rotary year. What has our impact been on our community, our County, the world? You should all be very proud of your personal contributions to our many successes as the Wellington Rotary Club.

Our action plan toolkit served us well; and from the County, the beach, the hospital, the food bank, to our local health team have all benefitted from our hard work. We have enhanced our local engagement, and we adapted well. During our year, we also celebrated by attending fellowship events, fundraisers, and active projects.

As we transition from this Rotary year to the next, let’s focus on the opportunity to balance continuity and change. Let’s move our club forward as we share “The Magic of Rotary” and “Unite for Good.” Let’s all get behind our President Elect Yvonne and make the Rotary year 2025/26 the best one ever.

My Thank You Corner:
This week, I want my thank yous to be directed to fellowship and fundraisers (one and the same).

The Bottle Depot:   Headed by Mike, Trudy, Bill M., and Kim, their unwavering hard work and organization have made this project so successful. Thank you also to the many Rotarians and Friends of Rotary who have worked so hard and diligently through cold, heat, rain, and freezing rain. As a result, 750,000 containers were kept out of our landfill. Wow!

Dinner Dance/Auction: Led by never-say-die Bill Pennell, he and his committee continued to work through adverse conditions (due to COVID) and returned a sizeable profit. Well done Bill and your committee.

Diners and Duffers: Norm and his able assistant, Mary, continued with our recent tradition of hard work = profits. Well done to both of you. A special mention to John Inwood who sold over 100 booklets. Well done to all Rotarians who sold booklets.

White Label Maple Syrup: Yvonne, you are the greatest! How do you manage to do everything that you do (write a book, operate a farm) and still bring in $16,000 for the food bank by encouraging the club to sell 1,800 bottles of syrup? It bodes well to have Yvonne take over as President.

Electronic Recycling: Norm, you are a Prince. You and your friends found the time to recycle a ton of electronics. Our environment is so much better because of you and your team’s efforts.

Golf Tournament: Colin and Ken…again a very successful golf tournament means money for the youth camps. A job well done in enlarging our footprint for young people.

Fellowship Dinners: 36 of 44 members attended our fellowship dinners. They allowed and assisted in the integration of our newer members, and they enabled us to get to know each other better. Thank you to our host Rotarians: • Dave Robinet • Robynne Smith and John Heeringa • Colin Fredericks • Howard Ziedenberg • Jacques Michaud • Bill Hurst • Lyn McGowan Thank you all. I could not have done my year without you!

Roger Tessier
President 2024/2025

On Second Thought: It is so weird being the same age as old people.

Last Week: Barinder Gill (Nurse Practioner Update)

Rotary meeting minutes June 03, 2025
Notes by Chris Compeau

The meeting was called to order by President Roger at 7:07 am. 40 Rotarians were present (38 present and 2 on Zoom) with 1 guest (speaker Barinder Gill).

Lyn circulated a signup sheet for the upcoming Past President’s Dinner. Roger indicated that there are still 2 spots available for the fall district conference.

‘O’ Canada’ was sung.  David Hawkins recited an invocation.  Breakfast was served.

Roger enquired about the health of members – fortunately there were no reported concerns.

Dawn introduced guest speaker Barinder Gill, the executive director of the Family Health Team.   Apart from being a member of the Picton Rotary Club, Barinder also has a background in the field of addictions and mental health services.  His guiding principle is ‘equitable access of medical care for all’.

Barinder spoke at length about the Family Health Team.  There are currently 16 practising family physicians on the FHT, although he indicated the ideal number should be 23.  He indicated that there are 14 health clinics which provide service to county residents including nutrition, cardiac health, palliative care, COPD/asthma, mental health, wound care and diabetes.  The FHT has an annual budget of $3.4 million and provides care to 17,374 county residents (while approximately 1,300 residents remain non-rostered).  Barinder spoke about the ‘Community Clinic’ which operates Tuesday to Thursday from 9 am to 4 pm and is serviced by both Family Physicians and Nurse Practitioners.  Approximately 1,000 local residents have been cared for with this model.

Barinder also spoke about recent Provincial directives for primary care.  In a program lead by Jane Philpott, the provincial government has committed to connect all Ontario residents to primary medical care via either a family physician or a nurse practitioner by 2029.  He also alluded to the Primary Care Act which was introduced this year.  It is clear that the government is committed to how primary care is delivered in Ontario.

Several questions by Rotarians were addressed by Barinder.  David Smith thanked our speaker.

Business

Roger reminded everyone that there will be a morning Rotary meeting on Tuesday June 24.

Ken and Colin provided another update on the June golf tournament.  Norm provided an update on the Storybook Walk.  Robynne noted that she will be publishing a summary of our club’s accomplishments over the past year in the Wellington Time’s in early July.

Roger reported that Pierre and Connie are celebrating their 54th wedding anniversary this week.

Roger told his joke of the week.  The happy toonie jar was passed around.

Pierre’s ticket was drawn for the 50/50 draw – unfortunately he failed to pull the ace of spades.

Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say, and do:

        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all
             concerned?

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
