President's Message

I’m looking forward to heading south on Monday. I just did a check of the weather in Orlando for the next ten days and it looks like it has warmed up from the nasty weather that they have had lately.
I’m not saying this to rub it in, I just had to check to see what to expect and to give an idea of what type of clothing to bring.
So I leave things in the hands of Past President, Phyo, who himself, along with Trudy has just arrived back from a visit from over the pond and warmer climates.
I think that from a mental standpoint, we all need to get away at one time or another no matter where it is.
We spent this past weekend in Ottawa with my sister-in-law and she informed us that she has just booked a trip to Whitehorse NWT.  Okay you might ask, why would you want to go there in the middle of winter?
I would say the answer is simple, we all have different thoughts and likes, so it is an individual thing where we go and for what reason.  The point is, we all need to pamper ourselves now and then.
While I am away, I hope to get a couple of visits in with Rotary Clubs in Clearwater and also Orlando. If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit with other clubs while on holiday’s, it is something that I would recommend if you can make it happen. Seeing how other clubs do things helps to open the mind and can bring new ideas that you can bring back to your home club.
Being away for a while brings you back revitalized and refreshed. New ideas often come to mind once we have cleared our heads.
Since I will be away for just over two weeks, I have Phyo if he would write the weekly message. So expect a new view on things.

Last Week: Discussion of Club Business

Our scheduled speaker was ill and unable to join us so we utilized the time for discussion of Club business.
We learned that Reg Gemmell has been in Picton hospital since last Monday with low hemoglobin and is receiving transfusions; he is able to receive visitors and we all wish him a speedy recovery.
Dave M introduced his guest, Ken Robinson, who moved to the County 6 months ago. He retired as Chief of Police in Hamilton, is a past president of the Ancaster Rotary Club and is interested in becoming a member of our club.
Tim has reached out to the President of a Rotary Club in the Canberra area, but has not yet heard back as they are busy fighting fires.
According to Dave R there are still a couple of holes in the schedule for Family Day. He is looking for 2 members to support Aaron Miller from the OPP in doing handprint art.
Liz shared the Family Day schedule which includes: free public skating, free reading, free books, fire prevention games, Lions Club photo booth, pine cone bird feeders, a magic stage show, free soup lunch and hot chocolate.
Lyn and Karen are registered to attend a Rotary Grant Proposal Writing Workshop on Feb 29.
Barry advised that May 5 is the tentative date for a tour of the Trenton Recycling Centre.
Dave M provided an update on how Quinte Health is positioned to deal with the coronavirus should a case arise.
Colin provided an update re the golf tournament. Both Barcovan and Timber Ridge are able to do 9 holes but we wouldn’t be able to do our own food there. Rather than coming back to the Legion for dinner after golf, Lana suggested that he check on the cost of dinner at the course.
Karen advised Sunday March 29 is the date for the Chapters “event” in support of the Spelling Bee.  Karen also raised the idea of teaching a cursive writing class at the school during lunchtime, since it is no longer part of the curriculum but some students may want to learn.
Club members modeled their new Rotary toques. Barry will be putting in a second order if anyone else wants to order one.

Rotary Song Lyrics:

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.

Four Way Test
Of the things we think, say, and do:
1.  Is it the TRUTH?
2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
     FRIENDSHIPS?
4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
