President's Message

On January 7, I spoke to Wellington Legion President Buck Buchanan about the status of the Legion.  He’s heard from the Public Health Team, including Pat Doyle, and they are basically saying the Legion is good to go. Buck has arranged to bring in a professional to “de-fog” the Legion as an extra safety measure and he’ll speak to Pat Doyle again about reopening plans. For Rotary, I’ll stay in touch with Buck, plus I will send a note to the members canvassing your interest in meeting at the Legion once it’s again possible.

My thanks to Dave Robinet for the wonderful job he’s doing managing our guest speaker lineup. Last week, we successfully tested an international ZOOM session with David H’s nephew Mark Hawkins. On Tuesday, we’ll have a return visit with Linda Downey and on January 19th we are joining with Campbellford Rotary to share a visit from Past Rotary International President, Wilf Wilkinson. Speaker recommendations from the members are greatly appreciated, for example, David MacKinnon has connected Dave R with our new QHC CEO Stacey Daub for a future speaking engagement.

A nice haul! Below are some shots Kim Lee sent me showing the bottles dropped outside the Depot and others he recovered from the Wellington Dump. Thank you Kim for keeping our Bottle revenues flowing.

Last week I mentioned that Trudy needed to step away from the New Initiatives Committee. Since then, Ken Robertson and Bill Pennell have come forward to join the Committee. My thanks to Ken and Bill for coming onboard.  I will set up a ZOOM session soon to get the team (below) together in January:
  • Lana Whitteker
  • Lyn McGowan
  • John Heeringa
  • Colin Fredericks
  • Bill Pennell
  • Ken Robertson

Last Week:
Mark Hawkins
(An Airline Pilot's Point of View)

President Howard opened the first meeting of the new year and since Ontario’s latest Covid lockdown, by Zoom, with a mention of the ‘presence’ of two additional guests as well as ADG Brenda Hillyer. David Hawkins then introduced the guest speaker, his nephew, Mark Hawkins, who was Zooming in from Toulouse, France.

Mark gave a lively and enthusiastic account of his life and work as a senior pilot for the Easyjet airline, living and flying out of Toulouse. He delved into the exhaustive training leading up to and following his gaining his commercial pilot’s licence and shared his relish of the challenges and joy of flying. Mark also shared with us what pilots and the airline industry in general is experiencing during this worldwide pandemic times.  He fielded several questions from members and was thanked by Liz Bosma.

The Bottle Returns collection service will not operate during lockdown.

ADG Brenda Hellyer shared information about a Trenton Club’s fundraiser, making domestic fire extinguishers available for a donation only. (President Howard sent an email about this, subsequently)

President Howard announced that Linda Donville will take over responsibilities for international programs and that a New Initiatives Programs director is needed to take over from President Elect, Trudy. There was also the question of how the Club might assist with the Great Lakes Watershed project. Thr Public Image broadcast on January 12th could also be of interest to members.

RYLA recipient and guest, Liam Smith, was introduced and spoke to the Club about the benefit of the RYLA program and keeping in touch with fellow participants. Liam is now working for the John Howard Society.

David MacKinnon up-dated the Club on the new Quinte Health CEO’s takeover and her intention to visit all the region’s hospitals in the coming week. David also answered questions from Karen and Barry.

After birthday wishes to John Inwood, the meeting closed at 8.25 with the four way test.

Picture Of The Week
With the pandemic lockdown in place, many of us are feeling a little bit of cabin fever.  If not for the circumstances, many of us would be on our winter vacation travels or other exciting activities. We can only reminisce of how it was like, and anticipate how we would emerge from this, hopefully very soon.   So, I thought it would be a good idea to add this section to our weekly bulletin, calling it "Picture of the Week", to post any picture that our readers would like to contribute, whether be it pictures from past travels in various places around the world where we may have visited, or just scenes around the County.  Please send me any picture you would like to see in this section.
As a start, I will contribute the first pic.   At left is the airplane map of Trudy and my journey to South East Asia, this very day, (Jan 10, 2020) last year. We flew from Toronto to HongKong direct, over the Arctic Ocean.  It's called the Polar Route. We didn't see much out the window because it was dark, but it was cool nonetheless to track our journey in the airplane's flight map.

Rotary Song Lyrics:

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.

Four Way Test
Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
