On March 10th, Wellington Rotary teamed with the PEC/Quinte Syrian community to host a dinner to kickoff the Wellington Rotary Earthquake Emergency Relief Fund. It is a locally-focused public appeal with Rotary leading with the first donation of $3000. Funds collected will be targeted to relatives of the Syrian families who settled in our area and who are victims of the earthquakes in Syria and Turkey.  For online donations, please click on the this button.

At the dinner youth representatives from each of the seven local families shared moving stories of their family's experience as refugees, arriving to our community between 2015 and 2022 due to the war in Syria that started almost 13 years ago now. They all left family behind many of whom lost everything in the earthquakes.

"Helping our neighbours in their time of loss is a tangible demonstration that we share their grief".  One month after the disaster most of those affected have made their way to pre-existing refugee camps along the border, such as the Karama Camp in Atimah/Atme, Syria (pictured below) and they remain in very dire circumstances.  We will work with local NGOs and agents to get funds to these targets.
